A Toast to Brindis Surges Ahead to Win First Division of Dan Lockie Overnight Derby Stakes

MILES CITY, MT—MAY 19, 2018—A Toast to Brindis made a late-charging run to win the first of two divisions of the $7,500 Dan Lockie Overnight Derby Stakes (not black-type) at Miles City on Saturday. The post-time favorite and jockey Luis Peralta covered the 350 yards in 18.734.

A Toast to Brindis ($4.20) is a 3-year-old gelding by Brindis Por Cayenne, out of the Beduino Secret mare A Secret Life. He is a Wyoming homebred for Gerald Kaul and is trained by Jess Villegas.

This was the first start of the year for A Toast to Brindis. He has now won half of his eight lifetime starts and has career earnings of $23,769. He was fourth in the Bucking Horse Sale Futurity last May in Miles City and won the Wyoming Bred Futurity at Wyoming Downs last summer.

Just a nose behind A Toast to Brindis was Over Drive Man and Jesus Flores. Over Drive Man is trained by David Greene for owner Mike Lipp.

Over Drive Man was bred in Texas by Casey Albert Lipp. The gelding is by Country Chicks Man and is out of the Jesse James Jr mare Georgia Gatorette. Last year, Over Drive Man finished third in the Bucking Horse Sale Futurity in Miles City before campaigning in Idaho; in eight starts, he has only missed the board twice.

Eyesa Special Cucouy, with Shaunda Larsen aboard, dueled with the top two finishers through the race and finished third by only a neck. The 3-year-old gelding is also trained by Jesse Villegas.

Broken Bones Cattle Company bred and owns Eyesa Special Cucouy, a Wyoming-bred son of Eyesa Special Slim. He is out of the First N Six mare Streakin Beddy Bye.

In lieu of trials for the Dan Lockie Derby, Miles City split entries into two overnight stakes on Saturday. Trials were originally scheduled but were canceled due to track conditions.

Completing the field was Rh White Fox. Feature Success and Gotta Have Corona were scratched.
