Stojan, Leech Dominate All Canadian Derby Trials

LETHBRIDGE, ALB—JUNE 9, 2018—Owner Charles G. Stojan and trainer William Leech dominated two trials to the All Canadian Derby at Lethbridge on Saturday by winning both races and taking the top three qualifying spots.

Jockey Martin Ortiz rode Stripsteak to a neck win over post-time favorite and stablemate True Copy in the second trial to set the fastest qualifying time.

The son of leading fourth-crop sire One Sweet Jess completed the 350 yards in :17.595 seconds into a 4 mph headwind to earn a 105 speed index and garner the top qualifying spot.

Stojan purchased the bay gelding for $14,000 as a yearling at the Los Alamitos Equine Mixed Sale. Steve Burns, DVM bred the multiple stakes qualifier from the Separatist mare Ruths Chris. He has won four of seven starts and banked $12,613.

True Copy, a graded-stakes winner, who is also Los Alamitos Equine Sale graduate, posted the second fastest clocking of :17.625 seconds, a 104 speed index. Also trained by Leech, the gray daughter of champion sire Tr Dasher, won the Canada QH Cup Futurity(RG3), and was second in the Jerry Stojan Futurity last year.

Ridden by Ricardo Moreno the Edward C. Allred California-bred has banked $42,249 with five wins in nine starts. Stojan paid $18,000 for the filly from the Separatist mare Realistically.

In the first trial Leech saddled Good Kiddy to a one-length and the third fastest time of :18.146 seconds, into a 4 mph headwind, for owner Charles Stojan. Ricardo Moreno was in the irons of the lightly raced daughter of multiple stakes sire Kiddy Up.

An $11,000 repurchase in the 2016 Los Alamitos Equine Sale, the filly from the Separatist mare Plenty Good, has only started four-times. After finishing third in her maiden last July she has won three straight, two this season. Allred is also the breeder.

Owner-trainer Deanne Davies posted the fourth and fifth fastest times with Ss Sunny Days and Atomic Blondie. Both 3-year-olds were bred in Alberta by Sazwan Speed Horses.

The eight fastest qualifiers from the two trial traces today will return Sunday, June 24th to contest the $20,000-est. finale.
