Pickle Dilly Surprises, Breaks Maiden in Idaho Cup Futurity

IDAHO FALLS, ID—JULY 20, 2018—Pickle Dilly (16-1), a homebred son of champion sire The Louisiana Cartel, put in a big effort down the inside rail under jockey Leonardo Gonzales to defeat fastest qualifier He Looks Royal by a neck in the $21,737 IQHA Idaho Cup Futurity Friday evening at Sandy Downs.

A home-bred racing for owner/breeder David Merritt, Pickle Dilly completed the 350 yards in :17.533 seconds, a 97 speed index into a 5 mph headwind. It was the first win in four career starts for the Jarett Mills trainee.

Merritt bred the black colt from the A Regal Choice mare Dilligass. Pickle Dilly entered the race off a second-place effort in the July 4 trials to get the second fastest qualifying time behind He Looks Royal. He earned $8,694 for the effort.

Racing for RTM Stables LLC, Larry Chapple and Dick Wasia, He Look Royal earned $4,347 for finishing second. It was the second black-type finish this year for the son of multiple stakes sire Royal Shake Em.

Mark Hanson conditions the homebred out of Mothers Gift by Feature Mr Jess. A finalist in the Rocky Mountain Spring Classic Futurity and second in the Bitterroot Juvenile, He Looks Royal has banked $7,435 this season. Jesus Canales had the riding assignment.

Tenth fastest qualifier Zipperdilly bounced off a third-place effort in the trials to also finish third in the Futurity final. The son of champion Foose put in a solid effort under jockey Raymundo Torres to finish three-quarters behind the leaders, picking up $2,173 for third.

A winner of one race from five starts this season, the bay colt is also trained by Jarrett Mills and owned-and-bred by David Merritt. Zipperdilly is a half-brother to Idaho Cup Futurity winner Pickle Dilly, with both 2-year-olds out of the A Regal Choice mare Dilligass.

Pickle Dilly rewarded backers with a $32.20 win payoff, $5.60 to place and $3.80 to show. Posttime favorite He Looks Royal returned $3 and $2.60 and Zipperdilly paid $8.20 to show.

Mommas Dynasty, Jess Humblekind, Just Red Jess, Jodee B Valiant and Unwavering Patriot completed the field.
