Fastest Qualifier Dashair Special Returns Friday to Win Idaho Cup Derby

IDAHO FALLS, ID—JULY 20, 2018—A late surge under jockey Jesus Canales, propelled fastest qualifier Dashair Special to a neck win over Jt Easy Bug in the $18,072 IQHA Idaho Cup Derby Friday evening at Sandy Downs. Lucken Bach finished one-length back in third.

Racing for owner-breeder Larry Chapple, Dashair Special completed the 400 yards in :19.668 seconds, a 98 speed index into a 5 mph headwind. Trainer Mark Hanson saddled the bay son of multiple stakes sire Dashair to his fourth consecutive win this year. The $7,228 winners' purse boosted Dashair Special's earnings to $22,880.

Chapple bred the gelding from the Special Leader mare Special Truth. He was third in the Hawthrone – Idared.com Futurity Division 2 last year and a finalist in the Rocky Mountain Spring Classic Futurity and the IQHA Idaho Cup Futurity. Dashair Special also won a non-black type stakes at Pocatello in May.

Glen Jamison saddled runner-up Jt Easy Bug for himself and Jill Jamison. Dallas Erickson rode the homebred son of Jess Got Easier from the Miss Perry Bug by Dashing Jess Perry. The multiple stakes-placed winner earned $3,614 to raise his earnings level to more than $15,000. He was second in the Bitterroot Derby on June 22.

Lucken Bach broke-in under jockey Raymundo Torres but still finished third for owner/breeders Bob and Scott Giltner. Scott conditions the son of multiple stakes sire Favorite Cartel from the Red (TB) mare Shez Changing Ways. The bay gelding earned $1,807 for his effort.

Little Red Wave, Super Starr, Hesa Beast, One Sweet Dance, Sealin Dealin, The Bossgirl and Sevenzz completed the field.

In the $5,500 IdaBet Quarter Horse Maturity (not black type), Mick Lovin, a 4-year-old son of Im Alright Now, defeated Rtm Mr Caccia by a neck.

Sparklin Cartel finished 3 ˝ lengths back in third. Trainer Micheal Monson saddled Mick Lovin to his fourth career win for owner River Run Ranch. Bred by Broc and Dakri Gilstrap, from the Streakin Jewel mare Micks Jewels, the brown gelding earned $3,300 for his effort.
