OKLAHOMA CITY, OK—MAY 12, 2019—Charlies Fury qualified for the Remington Park Derby as the third fastest qualifier on April 7, but was unable to race in the finals due to a minor bleeding problem in that race.

He made up for lost time on Sunday by qualifying as the fastest 3-year-old American Quarter Horse over seven trials for the Grade 2, $367,750 Heritage Place Derby, scheduled on closing day, June 1.

Owners Tom and Kathleen McNally of Guthrie, Okla., had to be thrilled to see Charlies Fury cruise to victory by 1-¾ lengths in the Remington Park Derby trials in April, only to be just as quickly disappointed when they found out he could not run back for the final.

The McNallys are back to where they were in April after watching Charlies Fury smoke a field of sophomore runners by two lengths at 400 yards in the Heritage Place Derby trials. He drew off easily as the 3-5 betting favorite in the first trial of the day and his time of :19.319 seconds over a fast track was the fastest of the day. Charlies Fury earned a dazzling speed index of 101 for his efforts.

Charlies Fury is trained by Michelle Hurdle and ridden by Agustin Silva. He is a gelded 3-year-old son of Furyofthewind, out of the Take Off Jess mare Jess Charlena. He was bred in Oklahoma by his owners.

Paying $3.40 to win, $2.40 to place and $2.10 to show, Charlies Fury won his third career race from eight attempts. He has never finished worse than third, boasting three second-place efforts and two more runs in third to go with his victories. Charlies Fury earned $5,838 for running first in his trial and improved his lifetime bankroll to $99,800.

It’s hard to believe, as dominant as he appeared on Sunday, that Charlies Fury has only run in a stakes race once, finishing second in the $267,000 Black Gold Futurity at Will Rogers Downs in Claremore on Sept. 23, 2018. He ran second that day to Viva Le Don, another horse that qualified in the trials Sunday.

Champion jockey Ricky Ramirez piloted Apollitical Pence to a half-length win over fellow qualifier Viva Le Don in the third trial to garner the second fastest clocking of :19.40 seconds, a 98 speed index with a 7 mph tailwind.

Trainer Trey Wood conditions the Grade 1-placed son of leading sire Apollitical Jess for owner Dunn Ranch. The sorrel gelding kicked off his career at Remington Park last year where he was third in the Laico Bird Stakes before moving to the West Coast to qualify to the Grade 1 Ed Burke Million, Golden State Million and Los Alamitos Two Million Futurities. Third in the Golden State Million, Apollitical Pence has banked $314,052. Dunn Ranch co-bred the gelding in Oklahoma with Womack Cavender Farms.

The aforementioned Viva Le Don, a son of multiple stakes sire Rock Solid Jess conditioned by Tammy Kay Johnson, held on to the third fastest clocking of :19.478 seconds, a 96 speed index.

Owned by Rocking J Running Horses and bred by Jack Manning and Tammy Johnson, Viva Le Don won the Black Gold 350 Championship Futurity at Will Rogers last fall. He has earned $128,098 and had jockey Randy Wilson aboard.

Docs Kansas Rep, under jockey Daniel Torres, defeated Jess Doin Time by a neck in the fourth trial (race 5) to get the fourth fastest time of :19.529 seconds. Trainer Kenny Laymon conditions the son of Louisiana Senator for owner Regina Laymon. Bred by JK Running Horses LLC, the stakes-placed gelding out of Docs Dynasty 123 by FDD Dynasty has earned $28,484.

Multiple stakes winner Jess Doin Time held on to the ninth fastest time of :19.564 seconds, a 94 speed index. Jason Olmstead conditions the son of Apollitical Jess for owner/breeder Tom Pouliot. The Minnesota-bred, out of Lenas Rare Lady by Rare Form, has won four of seven starts and earned $103,574. Cristin Esqueda has the riding call.

Moment Of Fury became the second qualifier for sire Furyofthewind when he defeated Money All Day in the final trial (race 8). Trained by Rick Robinson, Moment Of Fury races for owner Rogelio Marquez Jr. and was ridden by James Flores. He qualified sixth fastest, under jockey James Flores, with a :19.530 time, a 95 speed index.

Sarah Huskey bred last year's Dash For Cash Juvenile runner-up in Texas from the Relagate (TB) mare Moment Of Epiphany. Also a finalist in the Sam Houston Futurity(G2), Firecracker Futurity(G2) and Evangeline Downs Futurity, Moment Of Fury has earned $80,593.

Vf Jedi Returns and Jess Proved Youwrong battled to the sixth and seventh fastest times after finishing a head apart in the second trial (race 3).

Coming off a win in the Master Bug Stakes on April 20th, Vf Jedi Returns clocked :19.531 seconds, a 95 speed index to secure the sixth fastest time for owner Julio Contreras and trainer Samuel Valdivia. Jose Vega rode the son of multiple stakes sire High Rate Of Return out of Corona Couture by Corona Cartel. He has won eight of 12 starts, earning $169,258.

Jess Proved Youwrong, winner of the Oklahoma Derby(G3) in March, recorded the seventh fastest time of :19.549 seconds, a 94 speed index. Leading jockey James Flores rode the son of Apollitical Jess for trainer R.L. Rick Robinson and owners Jose Guzman and Rito Sosa. Rex and Sue Cox bred the $133,658 earner in Oklahoma from the Strawfly Special mare Oh Strawfly Go.

The aforementioned Money All Day, a son of champion sire One Famous Eagle, finished second to Moment Of Fury in the seventh trial to tie Jess Proved Youwrong for the seventh fastest time of :19:549 seconds. Eddie D. Willis trains the 3-year-old for owner Ed Melzer. Jimmy Brooks had the riding assignment aboard the Reliance Ranches LLC Oklahoma-bred out of A Dream To Remember by Corona Cartel.

Brooks and Willis also teamed in the fifth trial (race 6) with Pollitical Fire to get the 10th qualifying spot at :19.590 seconds. David D. James owns the son of Apollitical Jess out of Fire And Delight by Walk Thru Fire. Corner K Quarter Horses is the breeder.

Leading trainer Eddie Willis qualified two finalists while trainer Rick Robinson matched that total with his own pair of qualifiers.

Sunday’s derby trials were conducted with northerly tail winds, ranging from 7-10mph.
