Shake It Twice Wins Third Straight With Ontario Sires Stakes Derby Victory

AJAX, ONT—AUGUST 2, 2019—Chantelle Bourgeois homebred Shake It Twice raced to her third consecutive victory on Sunday when she defeated stablemate Momsextravagantheart by a head in the $42,563(US) Ontario Sires Stakes Derby at Ajax Downs.

Ridden by jockey Cory Spataro, Shake It Twice got a clean trip to finish the 350 yards in :17.940 seconds, an 89 speed index with a 12 mph tailwind. It was the fourth win eight starts for the daughter of Look At Magics Form and the $17,025(US) winners' purse boosted the sorrel filly's earnings mark to $48,937.

"She probably broke the best for me she has ever this year," said Spataro. "I think that is what sealed the deal for us. I heard TP (jockey Tony Phillips on Momsextravagantheart) coming for us and he's been on fire today but she's a pretty gritty filly and there's a lot of good things to come."

Phillips won the first four races on the nine-race card to reach 22 wins on the season and pad his lead in the rider standings.

Bourgeois also trains the Ontario-bred filly out of Shake Pretty Baby by Pretty Boy Perry. She has compiled an (8) 4-3-1 record and was third in the Ontario Sires Stakes Futurity last year.

Runner-up Momsextravagantheart earned $8,513(US) for the effort. Also owned-and-trained by Bourgeois, the son of Look At Magics Form was ridden by jockey Tony Phillips. Dean Link bred the sorrel gelding from the Shazoom mare Extravagant Moves.

"Shake It Twice was very sharp today and we had a lot of confidence in her," said Bourgeois. "But we knew [Momsextravagantheart] was an up and comer too. I have no words for this race. It was a team effort thanks to [jockeys] Cassandra Jeschke, who has helped us out so much, Cory and Tony and of course my amazing groom Melissa Slute who has so much dedication. It has been a phenomenal year and I am so grateful."

Christine Tavares' homebred Perryfunnysteen finished half-a-length back to pick up $4,256(US) for third. Joe Tavares trains the Sugarman Perry gelding out of Go Smashing Baby by Smooth First Down. Brian Bell had the riding call.

Usain Colt, Queens Award, A Fancy Arrangement, Carlos The Second, Tres On Fire and Bodacious Miracles completed the field.

Fans at Ajax Downs on Sunday enjoyed another spectacular day of racing and wagering on the nine-race card was up 21 percentover the same day in 2018.
