Corona Wildfire Top Qualifier For Eye On Corona Virus Futurity

OGDEN, UT—MAY 23, 2020—Corona Wildfire, a daughter of leading sire Corona Cartel, broke her maiden in impressive fashion on Saturday when she romped to a one-length win and the fastest qualifying time for the $32,400 Eye On Corona Virus Futurity at Weber Downs.

Ridden by jockey Cesar Moreno, Corona Wildfire was "much the best" in the first trial while posting a :17.208 clocking, a 92 speed index for the 330 yards, to garner the top qualifying spot over the 32 two-year-old's who participated in four trial races.

Trainer Josh Taylor saddled the bay filly for the ownership group of Peter Abruzzo, Jerry Hollendorfer and Robert Chapman. Bred in Oklahoma, from the Walk Thru Fire mare What Fire, by Ron and Denise VanAmburgh, Corona Wildfire sold as an embryo in the 2018 Heritage Place Winter Mixed Sale for $40,000.

Corona Wildfire is a half-sister to Los Alamitos Winter Derby(G1) winner Fire At Will. Her second dam is the All American Futurity(G1) winning three-time champion mare Ab What A Runner by Royal Quick Dash.

Taylor also saddled fifth-fastest qualifier Political Bedlam, an Arkansas-bred daughter of leading sire Apollitical Jess.

The top three futurity qualifiers came out of the opening trial including Play Ur Cards, a son of first-crop sire Docs Best Card, who posted the second-fastest qualifying time of :17.350 seconds.

Leading trainer Monty Arrossa saddled the gelding for owner-breeders Gary and Jeralyn Messenger. The Idaho home-bred, from the Feature Mr Jess mare Feature Miss Fame, was making his second start in the trials.

Money Flashin, a New Mexico bred son of multiple stakes sire First Moonflash was a neck behind Pay Ur Cards to get the third fastest clocking of :17.387 seconds. Trainer Alan Pinela saddled the brown colt in his career debut for owner Kenia Pinela Marioni. ALen Miramontes rode the Mike Abraham-bred 2-year-old from the Sixes Royal mare Royal Chamisa.

Jr Prissy Kiss, a daughter of leading second-crop sire Kiss My Hocks, broke her maiden in the second trial over Political Bedlam. Racing for owner-breeder J R Stables, the brown filly posted the fourth fastest time of :17.488 seconds, an 84 speed index.

Trainer Riley Moosman was hoping the half-sister to multiple stakes sire Jr Dynasty Mountain would bounce off a fifth place effort in her career debut May 9th in a trial for Hadley – Giles Futurity.

Other sires getting finalists in today futurity were Eye On Corona, Zulu Dragon, Favorite Cartel, Hez Our Secret and Apollitical Blood.

The 10 fastest qualifiers will travel to Laurel Brown Race Track to compete in the June 6, $32,400 Eye On Corona Virus Futurity final in South Jordan, Utah.
