Kina Big Deal Prevails in Blanket Finish in $52,570 Lucille Rowe Derby at Arapahoe

Kina Big Deal Prevails in Blanket Finish in $52,570 Lucille Rowe Derby at Arapahoe

AURORA, CO—AUGUST 5, 2020—Six horses hit the wire within a half-length of each other in a competitive edition of the $52,570 Lucille Rowe Derby at Arapahoe on Wednesday afternoon.

Kina Big Deal ($10.00) and Alfredo Triana Jr. edged clear of Dg Dreamer by a neck to finish first. The winner covered the 350-yard stakes race in 18.055 and earned an 82 speed index.

Kina Big Deal is trained by Hipolito Michel-Valverde for owner Juan Rodriguez. He was bred in Colorado by Thomas Bradbury and Lisa Beauprez, out of Teller Sheza Doll, by Teller Cartel.

Kina Big Deal was second in his trial on July 19 and was the fourth fastest qualifier to the final. The Jess Louisiana Blue gelding qualified to last year’s Cherry Creek Futurity and Adequan Prairie Meadows Juvenile Challenge. He is three for nine in his career with $34,197 in earnings.

Second place finisher Dg Dreamer was ridden by Jose Lopez for trainer Haley Hobbs and owners Pedro and Lilia Andazola. The One Dashing Eagle filly was bred by Richard and Genevieve Herrman, out of Iza Sugar N Spice, by Toast to Dash. Iza Sugar N Spice won the Lucille Rowe Derby in 2013.

Dg Dreamer won her trial as the fifth fastest qualifier. As a 2-year-old, she was second in the Cherry Creek Futurity and qualified to the Rocky Mountain Futurity before breaking her maiden at Will Rogers last fall.

The third-place finisher in the photo finish was Whatever You Think with jockey Roman Chapa. Whatever You Think was the second fastest qualifier and ran second in his trial to fastest qualifier Tainted Halo.

Whatever You Think is trained by Bob Johnson for owner George Seward. He was bred by Thomas Bradbury and Lisa Beauprez, sired by Apollitical Jess and out of Hay Gud Lookin, by Carters Cartel.

In ten career starts, Whatever You Think is still a maiden but has finished in the money in half of his starts.

Completing the field were Tainted Halo, De Capitator Bar, Intocable Cartel, Legendary Find, Captain Brave Heart, Kooler Wagon and Paint Can. Jessinourbodgit, also-eligible, was scratched.
