Fooses Flyer Explodes Late To Win Grants Pass' Autumn Derby

GRANTS PASS, OR—OCTOBER 13, 2020—Fooses Flyer exploded late under jockey Jose Figueroa to catch Mighty Tony T by a nose in Monday's $26,000 Autumn Derby at Grants Pass Downs. Df Storm Tales was a head back in a blanket finish to take third.

Conditioned by trainer Benito Curiel, Fooses Flyer completed the 400 yards in :20.044 seconds, equaling a 97 speed index. It was third career win and first stakes victory for the Washington-bred son of champion sire Foose.

Owned-and-bred by Malon Cowgill, Fooses Flyer picked up $10,400 to nearly double his career earnings mark to $23,113. He is out of the Strawfly Special mare Fly Thru Time.

After qualifying for the Pot O'Gold Futurity, John Deere Emerald Downs Juvenile Challenge and Far West Futurity at 2, Fooses Flyer broke his maiden at Grants Pass in his 3-year-old debut last June. In four starts this season his only loss was to the Autumn Derby fastest qualifier in the September 21st trials.

Runner-up Mighty Tony T earned $4,420 for owner Luis Torres-Arenas. Trainer Freddy Ibarra, the son of multiple stakes sire Dominyun is from the Mighty Corona mare L Bar D Mighty Fine. Taylor Smith had the riding. Roberto Ponce and Herman Torres bred the bay colt, who was making only fourth career start, in Oregon.

Metello Baird's Df Storm Tales, finished strong under jockey Nakia Ramirez, to earn $2,860 for finishing third. Kyndara McKinney trains the Oklahoma-bred son of second-crop sire Wagon Tales from the thoroughbred mare Storm's Promise by Seattle Fitz. . Darling Farms bred the three-time winning earner of $20,527.

Approval Given, Mc Una Aguila, Jess Candy Lips, Just Watch Him, Gc Lucky Cartel, One Flyin Foose and Tionesta completed the field.
