Flying Cowboy 123 Pair Take Fastest Two Spots In Old South Derby Trials

VINTON, LA–APRIL 26, 2024–A pair of gelded sons of leading second-crop sire Flying Cowboy 123, owned by Party Tyme Racing and trained by Jose R. Espinosa, posted the top two qualifying times for the Old South Derby on Friday, the opening night of the 2024 Delta Downs Quarter Horse season.

Recent Oklahoma Derby(G3) runner-up B Second Cowboy returned to the winner's circle for the second time in three starts this season following a three-quarter length win in the opening trial for the Old South Derby.

The Texas-bred son of leading second-crop sire Flying Cowboy 123 posted the fastest qualifying time from four trial races contested for the $110,420 Old South Derby to run back at Delta Downs on May 17.

Ridden by jockey Sabino Reyes, B Second Cowboy completed the 330 yards in :16.588 seconds, equaling a 99-speed index into a 10 mph crosswind, the fastest clocking of the night.

Bred by Espinosa from the Favorite Cartel mare Nsm Favorite Zoomer, B Second Cowboy has won six of 10 career starts. A finalist in the Sam Houston Futurity(G2) and the Evangeline Downs Futurity(G2) last season, B Second Cowboy has earned $99,325.

Last year's Old South Futurity winner Woopaa123 defeated multiple Grade 1 winner One Sweet Sugar by a neck in the third trial to record the second fastest clocking of :16.684 seconds, a 96 speed index into a 10 mph crosswind.

Also owned by Party Tyme Racing and trained by breeder Espinosa, the Flying Cowboy 123 gelding was bred in Texas from the Moon Shake mare Chalinashake. The four-time winner was also a Louisiana Downs Futurity(G2) and Firecracker Futurity(G2) finalist, who banked $133,226 and was ridden by Sabino Reyes.

One Sweet Sugar finished with a :16.743 clocking, a 94 speed index, and the fourth fastest overall. Racing for owner Rogelio Marquez, Jr. and trained by Jesus Marquez, One Sweet Sugar made her seasonal debut under jockey Jasiel Aquino.

Last season the daughter of One Sweet Jess, from the Heza Fast Dash mare Sugarshaker B, earned $545,788 with wins in the Lee Berwick Futurity(RG1) and Lassie Futurity(RG2).
