Q RACING—JULY 30, 2020—The pensioned stallion No Brakes Now died peacefully on the night of July 28, 2020, at his longtime home with owners Bob and Gary Johnson of Lemmon, South Dakota.
The 29-year-old stallion was bred by Haberfelde Ranch of Bakersfield, California, and was a son of The Signature and out of the Timeto Thinkrich mare Timeto Brake. He competed at eight tracks during his 12 career starts and retired as a stakes-placed runner.
The Johnsons acquired the horse when he was 3 years old.
He would sire 306 registered foals during his career at stud, including 57 winners from 109 starters and the earners of $625,057, led by Sign The Check Now ($40,442). Among them are 13 stakes winners and nine stakes-placed runners. He also sired horses that earned AQHA points in open and amateur competition.
“Brakes was kind and gentle, he was smart and athletic,” the Johnsons posted on their social media page. “He was the foundation of our breeding program, and we were very proud of his offspring. We have also kept several No Brakes Now mares for our broodmare band to carry on his amazing traits. Brakes you will be greatly missed, buddy.”
