ROCK SPRINGS, WY—SEPTEMBER 11, 2021—In the feature race of the Sweetwater Downs card, Sp Echo Mountain sprung a small upset as the winner of the $98,500 Sweetwater Futurity on Saturday afternoon. Five trials on August 28 determined Saturday’s field.
Sp Echo Mountain ($21.80) and jockey Joe Dominguez were gate-to-wire winners of the open, 350-yard futurity. The final time was 17.457; Sp Echo Mountain and runner up Mound Valley Eagle each earned a 103 speed index.
Riley Moosman trains Sp Echo Mountain for owner Dennis Woolsey. The Jr Dynasty Mountain filly was bred in Utah by Spence Peterson, out of Echo Creek Canyon, by Ruidoso Futurity (G1) winner Saint Shackleton.
Sp Echo Mountain added $39,400 to her lifetime earnings of $52,535. In five starts, she has never finished out of the exacta. She was second in the Utah Bred Futurity at Wyoming Downs and won her Sweetwater Futurity trial as the fifth fastest qualifier.
Moosman also trains Mound Valley Eagle, who finished a head behind the winner to place second with Jesus Valenzuela aboard. Andrea and Eddie Jensen own the One Fabulous Eagle gelding, who was bred in Idaho by Abigail Kawananakoa, out of the Foose mare Royal Fooseperrypie.
Mound Valley Eagle has earned $63,131 in his eight career starts, including three wins. He placed second in the Hadley/Giles Futurity at Weber and in the Beehive Futurity at Laurel Brown before qualifying to the Bitterroot Futurity (G3) at Pocatello. He was second in his Sweetwater trial as the fourth fastest qualifier.
Fastest qualifier Suzes Dynasty and Cristian Aguirre-Erives completed the trifecta for trainer Josh Taylor and owner Bill Doenz. The FDD Dynasty filly was bred by Flag Ranch LLC in Oklahoma, out of the Mr Eye Opener mare Brown Eye Suze, who competed in multiple graded stakes during her racing career.
Suzes Dynasty is three for eight lifetime with $56,195 earned, including a victory in the Wyoming Downs Futurity last month.
Completing the field were Perry, Fishin Off the Wagon, Western Dynasty, A Girl Thing, Cowboyhatbygucci and Love Moonin. Volar was scratched.
