SUNLAND PARK, NM—JANUARY 7, 2023—Making his first start of the new year New Mexico Classic Futurity(RG2) runner-up Flash Devine rolled to the top qualifying time from six trials contested today (Saturday) for the $237,706 Shue Fly Stakes at Sunland Park Racetrack & Casino.
The 10 fastest accredited New Mexico-bred 3-yaer-olds will return to Sunland Park Saturday, January 28th, to vie for the $111,721 winner's purse going 400 yards.
Under jockey Noe Garcia, Jr., Flash Divine cleared the field early then rolled to a 1-1/4 length winning margin to establish to top qualifying time of :19.568 seconds, a 99 speed index into a 5 mph crosswind. It was the third win in five career starts for the lightly raced son of champion sire First Moonflash.
Trainer Wesley Giles conditions colt out of stakes winner and multiple graded stakes producer Girlonthego, by Man In The Money, for owner-breeders Jimmy Negrete and Jimmy Vazquez. Also fourth in the New Mexico Breeders'(RG3) Futurity last May, Flash Divine has earned $91,449.
Trainer James J. Gonzales, III, sent out My Heart Jess Runs to a 1-3/4 length winning effort in the second trial to get the second fastest clocking of :19.607, a 98 speed index. The daughter of multiple stakes sire Jess A Chicks got a super clean effort under jockey Mario Delgado.
Racing for owner Boydston Enterprises, Inc., the Mike Abraham bred filly picked up her second career win and qualified for her first stakes. Out of the FDD Dynasty mare She's In My Heart, My Heart Jess Runs has earned $14,290 in six starts.
New Mexico Classic Futurity(RG2) winner First Lady On Canvas defeated Wood Dee Queen by a head in the third trial to record the third fastest clocking of :19.615 seconds, a 97 speed index. Jockey Esgar Ramirez rode the First Moonflash filly for owner-breeder MRB Racing LLC.
Trainer Manuel Rodriguez saddled the graded stakes winner of $192,783. She is out of the Pyc Paint Your Wagon mare Paint On Canvas.
