ALTOONA, IA–JULY 29, 2024–Two trials were held Monday afternoon for the $60,625 Iowa Stallion Quarter Horse Derby at Prairie Meadows. American Sparrow broke his maiden in trial one with the fastest time and will return to the finals to run on August 17.
Jockey Miguel Ramirez got the leg up aboard American Sparrow, who led the 400-yard field from wire-to-wire, clocking an 87 speed index in 20.086 seconds. The post-time favorite's victory paid $5.20 to win on 8/5 odds.
Ridden by Ramiro Garcia, Rm Flyeasycash came in second, a half-length behind American Sparrow, for the second fastest qualifying time to the finals:20.180 seconds. Rio Winna and jockey Cristian Esqueda won the second trial for the third fastest time.
American Sparrow placed third in last year's Iowa Stallion Futurity to Rm Flyeasycash, who placed second. He was a finalist in the Hawkeye Futurity. The $6,928 winner's share of the trial boosted his earnings to $33,961
Trainer Alex Wessels saddled American Sparrow for owner-breeder LXXI Racing Stables. The son of Fast of Fast N Famous Jeans is out of Wagonbelle by Lil Kool Wagon.
Jim Maupin conditions Rm Flyeasy Cash for owners-breeders Roy and Marily Maupin. The daughter of Rapid Ivory lit the board in every out but has to break her maiden from seven starts. The sorrel filly out of Fly Cora Fly by Fly Jess Fly has $32,171 in earnings.
