Jess A Outlaw Gets First Black Type Victory In $60,000 Lonnie and Elam Memorial Stakes

SUNLAND PARK, NM—FEBRUARY 2, 2025—Starting off a fourth-place finish in the $150,000 New Mexico Classic 870 Stakes(RG3) in his last start on December 15, Jess A Outlaw scored his first career stakes victory in the $60,000 Lonnie and Elam Memorial Stakes at Sunland Park on Sunday.

At odds of 9/2, jockey Alejandro Medellin guided the son of multiple stakes sire Jess A Chicks to a near gate-to-wire victory while completing the 870 yards in  44.531, equaling a 102 speed index with a 5 mph tailwind. The winning margin was 1-1/2 lengths.

Trainer Larry Chavez saddled the 5-year-old gelding to his fourth career victory in just 10 starts. The $36,000 winner's purse boosted his bankroll to $129,411.  John McClintic and Erin McClintic are the owners. John is co-breeder of gelding out of Zeta's Expo (TB) by Capitol Guy (TB) with Pat McClintic and Mike Abraham.

Graded stakes winner Why Buy The Cow earned $12,000 for finishing second for owner Carrol Durbin. Trainer Kenneth Durbin named jockey Kelsi Purcell to ride the 10-year-old Heza Motor Scooter gelding from the Celadon mare Southwest Treasure. Mike Weatherly bred the $ 339,181 earner.

Multiple graded stakes winner Freedom Flash collected $6,000 for finishing a head back in third to boost his career earnings over $672,432. Todd Fincher trains the 11-time winner for owner/breeders Leslie, Pierre Amestoy, Jr., and Roger Beasley. Freedom Flash is by champion sire First Moonflash from the Southern Halo (TB) mare Mi Camila (TB).

Sent off as the 5-to-2 second choice, Jess A Outlaw returned $7 to his winning backers. 

Completing the field were Jessie Jones Flash, Tsunami Gold, Hush Yer Face, Marked Cash, and A Streakin Mambacita.
