OPELOUSAS, LA–NOVEMBER 18, 2024–B Second Cowboy and Action Required are two of the 30 sophomores entered in Saturday's 400-yard Evangeline Downs Derby trials at Evangeline Downs Racetrack.
The 10 fastest qualifiers will meet in the $50,000-added Evangeline Downs Derby final on December 21.
A homebred son of Flying Cowboy 123 owned and trained by Jose R. Espinosa, B Second Cowboy will be making his first start since July 5. The gelding has won three of his six races this year -- including the May 17, $110,000 Old South Derby at Delta Downs -- and he has earned $110,065. B Second Cowboy's early season record includes a second-place finish, a head behind winner Eyesa Freighttrain B, in the March 23, 350-yard Oklahoma Derby (G3) at Remington Park.
B Second Cowboy drew post 4 and will be ridden by Arnulfo Gutierrez in the second of four trials.
Action Required races for Cruz Rendon's Rancho el Huajillo from the barn of trainer Raul Galvan. A gray son of champion KVN Corona, the gelding put together a three-race win streak last summer at Retama Park that included a head victory in the 400-yard, $105,000 TQHA Sires' Cup Derby (R) on August 17.
Action Required drew post 4 and will be ridden by James Flores in the fourth heat.
