BY MICHAEL CUSORTELLI
SUNLAND PARK, NM–MARCH 11, 2025–Angels In The Clouds, a homebred son of Jet Black Patriot and a recent maiden winner in his career debut, is one of 97 state-bred juveniles entered in Saturday's 300-yard New Mexican Spring Futurity (RG2) trials at Sunland Park.
The 10 fastest qualifiers from Saturday's 10 trials will meet in the April 5, $150,000 final.
Owned and trained by Joel Gutierrez-Gomez, Angels In The Clouds is coming off of a half-length victory in a 250-yard, $30,300 maiden-special-weight dash for New Mexico-bred 2-year-olds on March 1. The black colt is out of Clouds N Rainbows, winning daughter of Feature Mr Jess.
Angels In The Clouds drew post 2 and will be ridden by Brian Barraza in the 10th trial.
Jeanette J. Saenz's King Leonardo D ran second to Angel In The Clouds in the March 1 race. Juan Meraz trains the gray Osbaldo gelding and $9,500 yearling purchase at last year's New Mexico-Bred Sale at Ruidoso Downs.
King Leonardo D drew post 2 and will be ridden by Julian Zavala in the second heat.
Other noteworthy juveniles entered in Saturday's trials include Daddy Tungsten, a gray son of Big Daddy Cartel and a $320,000 buy at last year's New Mexico-Bred Sale. Trained by Eric Valenzuela for owners Tungsten Racing Partnership and Heysol Howlet, the colt is out of Wish You Had One To, a winning and multiple graded stakes placed daughter of the Corona Cartel stallion Stel Corona.
Daddy Tungsten drew post 7 and will be ridden by Sergio Becerra Jr. in the seventh trial.
