ATLOONA, IA–JULY 4, 2026–The Sunday card at Prairie Meadows features a 10-race program, with first post at 4:00 p.m. The spotlight falls on the $68,025 Cyclone Derby, where a full field of 12 Iowa-bred 3-year-olds will sprint 350 yards in the fourth race of the afternoon at approximately 5:15 p.m.
Chew Bac Cah has been installed as the even-money morning-line favorite following another outstanding performance in the Grade 2 Heritage Place Oaks. The talented filly went gate to wire to win by one-half length after winning her trial heat, and she continues to establish herself as one of the nation's top sophomore fillies. In 11 career starts, she has recorded seven victories and earned $296,586.
Owned and bred in Iowa by Lunderborg, LLC, Chew Bac Cah is by Apollitical Jess and out of the Pyc Paint Your Wagon mare Paint Or More. Jason L. Olmstead trains the filly, who will break from post seven with Ramiro H. Garcia in the saddle.
Royal Candy King gives the Olmstead barn another major contender at 6-1 morning-line odds. The gelding captured last year's Jim Bader Futurity and opened his 2026 season with a runner-up finish in his Heritage Place Derby trial. He has won four of seven career starts, added one second-place finish, and earned $118,362 for owners Robert S. and Sandra L. Brown.
The Iowa-bred son of Jess Good Candy is out of the Teller Cartel mare Tell Her Shes Queen and was bred by Summer Hill Farms, LLC. He will break from post nine under jockey Armando Alvidrez as he looks to add another stakes victory to his résumé.
The Cyclone Derby has assembled a deep, talented field of Iowa-bred sophomores, featuring proven stakes performers and emerging contenders at the starting gate. With a competitive field of 12 lining up for the 350-yard dash, fans and bettors can expect one of the most anticipated races of the Prairie Meadows weekend.
The races at Prairie Meadows can be watched on Q-Racing Video.
