Boot Scoots Rallies To Capture $50,000 Bill Reed Memorial Stakes

Boot Scoots rallied after battling for the early lead to capture Saturday night's $50,000 Bill Reed Memorial Stakes for 3-year-olds and older going 870 yards at The Downs at Albuquerque.

Ridden by Christian Ramos, Boot Scoots broke sharply and dueled for the lead before rating back and mounting another run to defeat Letz Go Brandan by three-quarters of a length. The 4-year-old gelding completed the 870 yards in :44.585, earning a 99 speed index over a fast racing surface.

Longtime trainer Tony E. Sedillo conditions Boot Scoots for owner CHR Racing. Bred in New Mexico by Jaime Cervantes, the sorrel gelding is by multiple stakes sire Jess A Chicks from the Heza Motor Scooter mare Shez Jessa Scooter.

The $29,500 winner's share increased Boot Scoots' career earnings to $220,831 from 21 starts, with six wins, three seconds and two thirds. His stakes résumé includes victories in the Bill Reed Memorial and restricted Grade 2 Red or Green Stakes. He has also finished second in the restricted Grade 2 New Mexico Classic Derby and Grade 3 Zia 870 Championship and was a finalist in the Grade 1 Championship at Sunland Park and Grade 3 West Texas Maturity.

Letz Go Brandan, the 2-1 favorite under jockey Edgar S. Martinez, dueled for the lead before being outfinished late and held second, three-quarters of a length behind the winner and 3 3/4 lengths in front of Bart Sip Some (TB).

Angel E. Dominguez trains Letz Go Brandan for owner Edgar Del Real Torres. Dean R. Frey bred the 5-year-old gelding by leading sire Favorite Cartel from the Mr Jess Perry mare Counting On You. Letz Go Brandan was an $80,000 purchase at the 2022 Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale. The $10,000 runner-up check boosted his career earnings to $88,216 from 20 starts. He has five wins, two seconds and three thirds and was previously a finalist in the Horseshoe Indianapolis Juvenile Challenge Stakes.

Bart Sip Some had no early speed but rallied strongly to get up for third, finishing 3 3/4 lengths behind Letz Go Brandan. Enrique Portillo Gomez rode the 5-year-old gelding for trainer Jeffrey J. Trujillo and owner Onesimo Bustamante-Hernandez.

Bred by KM Racing Enterprise, Inc., Bart Sip Some is by Thoroughbred sire Stay Thirsty from the Mineshaft mare Sally Simpson. The versatile gelding has competed in both Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse races. His $5,000 third-place check in the Bill Reed Memorial increased his combined career earnings to $156,099 from 29 starts, with six wins, five seconds and six thirds.

Completing the field behind the top three were Flying Gold Jess, Mucho Zmoke, Wynnchester, Volcoms Favorite and Blur. Mister Lights Out was scratched.
