CV FDDDINASTY SHAN POSTS THE FASTEST QUALIFYING TIME FOR THE PCQHRA BREEDERS FUTURITY

J. Francisco Diaz’s Cv Fdddinasty Shan, winner of the Grade 1, $960,000 Ed Burke Memorial Futurity, improved his record to a perfect 4-for-4 while posting the fastest qualifying time of :17.680 for the Grade 2, $300,000 PCQHRA Breeders Futurity on Sunday night at Los Alamitos.

Cv Fdddinasty Shan’s winning effort came in a rematch against Ed Allred's Faultless, the runner-up in the Ed Burke Memorial. But the night belonged to Cv Fdddinasty Shan, who won the sixth trial by a half-length over S-Quarter K LLC, Robyn Gordon, and Layne Sprouse’s Celtic Cowboy. Cv Fdddinasty Shan recovered from a slow break and drifted out before taking control of the race. Jesus Rios Ayala piloted the Lindolfo Diaz trainee to keep his record spotless. Celtic Cowboy also qualified from this trial in a time of :17.766. Faultless ran third and did not advance to the final to be held here on Sunday, September 13.

“Just an amazing horse,” Lindolfo said of his trainee. “He’s so professional. He’s the easiest horse to train with and easiest horse to deal with. He’s all class. We gave him a little bit of time. I think I freshened him up like 10 days to two weeks. Then we started training him a little bit lighter for about three weeks and then I started getting after him a little bit. I gave him a little breeze about three weeks ago just to try to set him up for this race. It looks like he came back pretty good.

“(Armando Viramontes) talked to (Ayala) a little bit. He’s an easy horse to ride and I told him about the horse’s little quirks that he has. He’s pretty good, the horse. It’s a bad deal for Armando but like I told him, when you come back the horse is yours again. Right now, let’s see what happens in the final.”

Bred in Mexico by Jgs Racing Stables, Cv Fdddinasty Shan is a gelding by FDD Dynasty out of Shangrilalala.

Dale Winterborn’s Nuclear Arsenal, third in the Ed Burke final, won trial seven by a head with jockey Eduardo Nicasio up for trainer Paul Jones while posting the second-fastest qualifying time of :17.745. Nuclear Arsenal, a colt by Inspyre out of top mare Thermonuclear Energy, was also a trial winner in the Ed Burke.

There was a timer malfunction during the fifth trial of the night, which was won by Juan Moya and Saul Acosta’s Test Pilot by a nose over James Markum and Steve Burns’ Indiana Fever. A detailed, frame-by-frame digital video review of the fifth trial was conducted this week, leading to Test Pilot’s winning time being set at :17.749. Existing data from the track’s photo-finish provider was then used to determine Indiana Fever’s final time. The photo-finish data indicated that Indiana Fever finished 12/1,000ths of a second behind Test Pilot, giving her a time of :17.761. These times placed Test Pilot as the third-fastest qualifier, while Indiana Fever tied for the sixth-fastest qualifying time overall.

Gamaliel Garza Garcia’s Uptick is on the upswing. The Favorite Cartel colt has now won two of his last three starts, with the most important victory coming in his Governor’s Cup Futurity trial. With Martin Arriaga aboard for trainer Juan Aleman, Uptick led from start to finish despite lugging out during the stretch run from post one.

“He had trouble,” Aleman said. “He broke in and he’s never worked well on the inside. On a work, he did the same thing. He just doesn’t like the rail. You can that he had a lot of horse left. Martin was holding him the whole way. I think he could have gone a lot faster. We’ll see for the final if he draws better.”

The Allred-bred colt, out of stakes winner Up For It, picked up his second career win from five starts. His winning time was the fourth-fastest of the night at :17.754.

Larry and Bobbie Rice’s AJ Your Favorite was a bit spicy on her way to the gate, unsaddling jockey Justine Klaiber. The Apollitical Jess filly settled down, took the lead from post three, and held off Jess One Famous Eagle by a head. There was a brief delay before the start after a horse broke through the gate and was scratched, but AJ Your Favorite handled the incident smoothly before securing the trial win.

“She just got a little hot,” Klaiber said. “She got a little mad. We got to the gates, and she ran a good race. She handled (the delay at the gate) pretty good for the way she behaved. She broke pretty good and finished strong.”

The opening trial went to Juniors Quarter Horses, Inc.’s Rational, a filly by Favorite Cartel out of champion Quirky. Rational’s older half-brother, Mask Mandate, won the Go Man Go Handicap later on Sunday night. With Nicasio up for Jones, the Burns-bred filly won her trial by a half-length from post seven while defeating Ed Burke fastest qualifier Zionsville.

“I really loved having the outside post for this filly and being in an early race,” Jones said. “She just did everything right. Nicasio did a good job riding her. This filly is just getting better and better. I’m happy for Juniors Quarter Horse. I trained for them years ago. It’s nice to see them have some success. She handled (the outside) well. That’s all you can ask for, just get a good clean break, a clean race, and room to run. When that happens, the good horses are able to prevail.”
