Spicy Cartel Scores First Stakes Victory in Minnesota Quarter Horse Derby

Spicy Cartel earned her first career stakes victory Thursday with a late-running score in the $47,800 Minnesota Quarter Horse Derby at Canterbury Park.

Ridden by Armando Alvidrez, Spicy Cartel rallied from off the pace to catch Straight Takela Nite, winning by a half-length while covering 400 yards in :20.313.

Owned by Magaly Sanchez and trained by Jason Olmstead, Spicy Cartel was bred in Minnesota by Michel Ayala Sanchez. The filly is sired by Chilitos and out of the Teller Cartel mare Cutielicious.

Spicy Cartel improved her record to 11-2-1-1 with earnings of $46,027. Thursday's victory marked her first stakes win after previously qualifying for the North Star State Derby, Minnesota Futurity and North Star State Futurity.

Straight Takela Nite crossed the wire second under Mark Jasso for owner, trainer and breeder Briannah McDaniel. The gelding is sired by Mn Guns and out of the Kela mare Ta Kela Warning. He now has a record of 5-1-1-0 with earnings of $20,385.

Sophey finished third under Ryder Olmstead for owner and breeder Lunderborg LLC and trainer Jason Olmstead. The gelding is sired by FDD Dynasty and out of the Moonin The Eagle mare Sweet Carol Line.

Sophey has compiled a record of 11-2-2-5 with earnings of $45,678. He finished third in the North Star State Derby earlier this season after running second in the Minnesota Futurity and third in the North Star State Futurity as a 2-year-old.

Holy Dynasty, Cyber Security, This Eagle Can Rock, Little White Dove and Del Cartel completed the order of finish. Streak N Mi Corazon was scratched.
