CYPRESS, CA—August 21, 2026
Grade 1 Ed Burke Memorial Futurity winner Cv Fdddinasty Shan and Governor’s Cup Futurity winner Constituent will headline a terrific group of 59 juveniles competing in trials for the Grade 2, $300,000 PCQHRA Breeders Futurity on Sunday night at Los Alamitos.
There will be eight futurity trials contested on Sunday, beginning with the first of nine Quarter Horse races on the card. The program will conclude with the running of the Grade 1 Go Man Go Handicap. First post is 6:50 p.m.
The horses with the 10 fastest times in the 350-yard trials will advance to the PCQHRA Breeders Futurity final on Sunday, September 13. In addition to a stellar group of 2-year-olds—37 of which have already posted at least one victory—the draw has created several great rematches and outstanding matchups.
The marquee trial comes in race six: a reunion between J. Francisco Diaz’s Cv Fdddinasty Shan and Ed Allred’s Faultless, the top two finishers from the $960,000 Ed Burke Memorial on June 21. Cv Fdddinasty Shan will also put his undefeated record on the line, having wire-to-wired the field while narrowly holding off the fast-closing Faultless on Ed Burke night. A gelding by FDD Dynasty trained by Lindolfo Diaz, Cv Fdddinasty Shan is a perfect 3-for-3 in his young career.
Cv Fdddinasty Shan won the Ed Burke despite early trouble. Fast out of the gate, he broke inward and bumped at the start before accelerating to take the lead, holding on for the biggest victory of Lindolfo’s training career. Jesus Rios Ayala will ride Cv Fdddinasty Shan from post position seven on Sunday. Armando Viramontes, who guided him in the Ed Burke, remains sidelined with an injury for the next several weeks.
The second major rematch of the trials comes in race three between Governor’s Cup Futurity winner Contentious and Governor’s Cup runner-up Lonely At Night. The two fillies have been models of consistency, with Manuel Chavez and Jose Santos’ Contentious finishing in the top three in all five of her starts. She was the fastest qualifier for the Grade 2 Robert Adair Kindergarten Futurity before returning from her runner-up effort in the Governor’s Cup trials to outfinish Lonely At Night and win the $290,000 final. Eduardo Nicasio will pilot the Favorite Cartel filly from post position two. Her older brother, Mask Mandate, will compete in the Go Man Go later on Sunday night.
Steve Burns’ Lonely At Night has been in red-hot form over her last four starts after debuting with an out-of-the-money finish. She won her Ed Burke Memorial trial and finished second to Niece Laura in their Governor’s Cup trial before delivering that terrific effort in the final. The Mike Casselman trainee will start from post six, marking the first time in her five-race career that she has drawn an outside post. In all her previous starts, she broke from post three or inside. Justine Klaiber has the mount.
The opening trial will be headed by Ed Allred’s Zionsville, who was sent off as the 8/5 favorite in the Ed Burke final in his last start. The son of Mpshinning ran solidly to finish fourth despite bobbling at the start and chasing the sizzling-fast Cv Fdddinasty Shan. Zionsville lacked the explosive punch delivered by Faultless and didn't have enough late momentum to catch Nuclear Arsenal for third place in the Grade 1 final. To his credit, Zionsville was sensational in his first two career starts, winning his debut by a neck before overwhelming his rivals in the Ed Burke trials. A return to that form should have him back in the PCQHRA Breeders final with Cesar Ortega riding for trainer James Glenn, Jr.
A deep group of talented juveniles is peppered throughout the card. Allred’s Dice Game won his Governor’s Cup trial but missed advancing to the final. He’ll lead trial two against Ed Burke finalist and California Juvenile Gold Rush runner-up MP Jess Rockin. The fourth trial features Rancho Humilde’s Golden Token, who is undefeated in two starts and returns to action after posting the fastest qualifying time to the Governor’s Cup before missing the final. Valentin Zamudio will saddle the Golden Boi colt as he prepares to face Thompson Racing, Inc. and Korry Trapp’s Jess One Famous Eagle, who has looked impressive in two career victories at 300 yards.
Saul Acosta and Juan Moya’s Test Pilot, a three-time winner whose biggest victory came in an Ed Burke trial, will headline the fifth trial. Dale Winterborn’s Nuclear Arsenal is the marquee name in trial six, where the Inspyre colt faces a solid group that includes Governor’s Cup fourth-place finisher Still Standing and the charismatic filly Blackk Maggic. The final trial is a wide-open contest led by Governor’s Cup trial winner Ap First To Rocket, a stablemate of Golden Token also owned by Rancho Humilde. Jaque, third in the Kindergarten final and a two-time winner from five starts, looms as another top contender.
The $300,000 purse for this year’s PCQHRA Breeders Futurity final represents a 15% increase over last year’s purse of $260,000.
