BOSSIER CITY, LA—MARCH 18, 2017—A pair of Coronas Leaving You 3-year-olds dueled to the wire Saturday in the $93,898 Mardi Gras Derby at Louisiana Downs. Ridden by jockey Cipriano Vidana, Zooboo got up at the line to defeat Jrs Coronas Shadow by a neck and pocket the winner's purse of $42,255. The Coronas Leaving You gelding covered the 400 yards in :19.593 seconds to earn a 105-speed index.
Jockey Martin Trejo saddled the brown gelding to his second win in six career starts for owner Rosalio Espinosa. Bred by M. & S. Zingelmann and C. Crenwelge, from the Dashin Bye mare Zoobilee, Zooboo has earned $63,125.
"He needed an out after the layoff," said assistant trainer Saul Romero, following the race. "David (Alvarez), who rode him in trials, chose the fastest qualifier and we understood. Cipriano broke him for us, so he knows him well and did a very good job today," he added.
Trejo said he has no firm plans for the colts next start.
Also a gelded son of Coronas Leaving You, Jrs Coronas Shadow races for owner Gary Hartstack and trainer Kenny Roberts, Sr. Donald Watson was aboard to pickup the $15,963 runner-up paycheck. Julien Stevens III bred Jrs Coronas Shadow from the Dashing Val mare Shadow Of Colors. He has compiled an (8) 4-1-0 record and banked $53,963.
After a late gain under jockey Everardo Rodriguez, Fabulously Fast Game finished third to pickup $9,380. Owned-and-trained by Martin Trejo, Fabulously Fast Game is a Game Patriot colt from the Mr Jess Perry mare Fabulously Fast. Grant Farms, LLC is the breeder.
Tf Eyed Firefighter, Coronaoro, Shatto Stoli, No Politics Here, Ivys Best Game, La Mos Corona and Tee Mata completed the field.
