Thirty-Nine to Race In Los Alamitos Maiden States Trials Tonight

LOS ALAMITOS, CA—JANUARY 29, 2017—Santos Montemayor’s PCQHRA Breeders Futurity finalist Better Check Him and two-time Arizona stakes runner-up Frozen Icon are among the 39 sophomores that will compete in the trials to the $106,750 Los Alamitos Maiden Stakes (not black type) tonight (Sunday).

There will be five trials at 350 yards with the horses with the 10 fastest times advancing to the final to be held on February 19. Horses are eligible to compete in the Maiden trials if they are maidens as of December 1, 2016. Since that deadline, nine have gone on to visit the winner’s circle.

To be ridden by Eduardo Nicasio for trainer Juan Aleman, Better Check Him Out has yet to win a race in four career starts, but he made the field to the $430,000 PCQHRA Breeders Futurity when running second in the trials to Thirty Six Curls. The Foose gelding will be in action in the fourth trial of the night. He’ll be facing a field that will also include Angel Hernandez’s Fire Is Blue, which has hit the board in four career starts.

Martha Wells’ Frozen Icon ran in three futurities in Arizona, including a second-place finish in the Turf Paradise Futurity for trainer Matt Fales. The Texas Icon filly will be making her Los Alamitos debut when she races in the second trial versus Wayne Shizuru’s First Royal Tearoses, which ran third in a trial to the Ed Burke Million Futurity.

The opening trial will feature Lucky Seven Ranch’s Sass You Blue, who hit the board in a pair of Grade 1 futurity trials. Trained by Mike Casselman, Sass You Blue was third in her Golden State Million trials and Los Alamitos Two Million trial. Carlos Huerta will ride the One Dashing Eagle filly.

Terry Knight, now conditioning Quarter Horses for Legacy Ranch after the retirement of trainer Denny Ekins, will saddle Epic Empire in the third trial of the evening. The Tres Seis gelding will face Veronica Hernandez’s Commando 626, a third-place finisher in a trial to the Two Million.

Wild West Futurity finalist Stolin Diamond will race in the final trial with a field also featuring Mr Tempting and All Kinds Of Kind and more.
