Oklahoma Derby Trials And First Stakes Races Lead Sunday At Remington Park

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK—MARCH 9, 2017—The Opening Weekend for the 2017 Remington Park American Quarter Horse Season will wrap up with a 10-race program at 1:30pm Sunday afternoon.

The racing card features six trials for the $251,000 Oklahoma Derby and the first stakes races on the schedule, the $50,000 Eastex Stakes and the $61,800 Mighty Deck Three Stakes.

The 10 fastest 3-year-olds from the Oklahoma Derby trials will move on to the Grade 3 final on Saturday, March 25. All of Sunday’s derby trials are at 350 yards.

The Grade 2 Eastex Stakes, for 3-year-olds and older at 350 yards, features a stellar cast of previous stakes winners. BV Midnite Express, winner of the $1 million Heritage Place Futurity in 2015, is the richest runner in the Eastex with career earnings of $767,683.

Owned by Bella Vista Farms of Arcola, Ill. and trained by Eddie Lee Willis, the Freighttrain B gelding will be ridden in the Eastex by Cody Smith.

I V Gone leads the Eastex field in victories with 10 career scores. Owned by Celesse Fregoso of Jones, Okla. and trained by Juliana Mancillas, the Ivory James gelding will be ridden by Cody Wainscott.

The Eastex is the ninth of 10 on Sunday with an approximate post time of 4:58pm.

The Oklahoma-breds get the next stakes race on the card as Sunday wraps up with the Mighty Deck Three Stakes at 250 yards. The race is for 3-year-olds and older with plenty of star quality.

Valiant Rogue, winner of the$1,224,000 Rainbow Derby at Ruidoso Downs last year, has the rail post position. Owned by Wyok Ranch of Hillsdale, Wyo. and trained by Judd Kearl, jockey Rodrigo Vallejo will be aboard the son of Valiant Hero.

Also by Valiant Hero, Sam Crow is the leading earner in the field with $913,737 in the bank. Owned by Terry Baber of Burkburnett, Tex., the 5-year-old gelding ran second in the Mighty Deck Three and two other stakes races at Remington Park a year ago.

The defending champion of the Mighty Deck Three returns as Win Rabbits Fly has drawn post number five. Owned by Raul Banuelos, Jr. of Wichita, Kan., the son of Fly Jess Fly is trained by Miguel Banuelos.

The Mighty Deck Three Stakes is race 10 on Sunday, at 5:24pm.

The 2017 American Quarter Horse Season begins this Friday at Remington Park. The Opening Night action begins at 6pm. Saturday’s expanded program of 17 Oklahoma Futurity trials will begin at 4pm. Then the final day of the Opening Weekend on Sunday, will start at 1:30pm. Sunday racing features trials for the Oklahoma Derby and the first stakes races of the season with the Eastex Stakes and Mighty Deck Three Stakes. All times are central.

The 2017 American Quarter Horse Season at Remington Park will continue thru Saturday, June 3.
