La Primera Winner Heads Field Of 10 In La Pacifica Handicap On Friday

LOS ALAMITOS, CA—MAY 10, 2017—Jeff Aldstadt and Kim Pitcher’s Start Somethin Bad had the time of her life when she won the $220,000 La Primera Del Ano Derby on April 1.

The Pappasito filly has also run in the PCQHRA Breeders Futurity, finished second in the Los Alamitos Invitational Stakes and ran in the Seal Beach Handicap. Start Somethin Bad will look to keep the good times rolling when she headlines a full field of 10 in the $25,000 La Pacifica Handicap for fillies on Friday night at Los Alamitos.

Trained by Paul Jones, Start Somethin Bad will face three other fillies coming out of the La Primera plus one filly that competed against the boys in the Grade 1 Los Alamitos Winter Derby.

Robin MacPherson’s Kiddy Up Cowgirl it the filly that ran third in the Winter Derby. She was sixth with about 200 yards left in the race, but she made a monster run to finish in third place. Well rested since that February 11th outing, the Kiddy Up filly will race from post seven for trainer James Glenn, Jr. in the La Pacifica.

In addition to Start Somethin Bad, the other three La Primera fillies are Jess Mas, Sweet Aguila and Staggering Strides. Owned by Oscar Andrade and Steve Burns, Jess Mas ran in the Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity and won her trial to the La Primera, but early trouble in the form some bumping hampered her La Primera run. Jess Mas finished sixth in that race, but figures to be tough on Friday night.

EG High Desert Farms’ Sweet Aguila posted a half-length win in her La Primera trial, but also bumped early in the La Primera. She ended up in eighth place, but she is one of the most talented runners in this field and will be leaving the gate from the outside post number 10.

Abigail Kawananakoa’s Staggering Stride was third in the La Primera and before that she ran fourth in the Winter Derby. She’s hit the board in eight of 12 career starts for trainer Chris O’Dell. Los Alamitos Maiden Stakes winner All Kinds Of Kind, Freshman Fillies Stakes winner Scholarly, Apollititaka, Trippys Royal Jess and Brimming Corona will completed the field. Friday’s card will also feature five races for 2-year-olds.
