ALTOONA, IA—OCTOBER 13, 2017—Saturday night’s 10-race closing-night card at Prairie Meadows features the Bank of America Challenge Championships and four other stakes which have long been mainstays of the track’s Quarter Horse racing program.

Valley Junction Futurity

The Kendrix Brothers’ A Jordon Reed, a homebred gray son of Jumpn Chic and the fastest qualifier, will be seeking his second career stakes win in Saturday’s 350-yard, $289,830 Valley Junction Futurity.

A Jordon Reed has earned $99,796 from five starts, and his three wins include a half-length victory in the 350-yard, $168,000 Mystic Lake Northlands Futurity at Canterbury Park on July 2. The gelding drew the rail post and will be ridden by Oscar Delgado for trainer Ed Hardy.

Other Valley Junction contenders include Gordon Pevehouse’s Queen Bee Candy. A homebred filly by Cartels Candy Man trained by Clint Crawford, Queen Bee Candy won two of her three outs during the Remington Park spring meet, including the 330-yard, $61,800 FL Lady Bug Stakes (R) for Oklahoma-breds on May 29.

Omar Reyes will ride Queen Bee Candy from post 7.

Ten 3-year-olds have been entered back in Saturday’s 400-yard, $145,604 Altoona Derby.

Born To B Bad, a stakes-winning Freighttrain B gelding trained by Tammy Johnson for owners Cody Bowling and Melissa Slayton, drew post 2 and will be ridden by Benito Baca. Born To B Bad made his local debut with a three-quarter length victory in an Altoona Derby trial on September 29, but the gelding was coming off of a summer campaign during which he won the 350-yard, $67,000 Speedhorse Derby at Fair Meadows at Tulsa on July 29.

Iowa-breds will be featured in Saturday’s 350-yard, $174,400 Jim Bader Futurity (R) and 400-yard, $110,132 Polk County Derby (R).

Cr Lota Girl, the fastest qualifier, heads a field of 10 state-bred juveniles in the Jim Bader Futurity. Trained by Jason Olmstead for owners Curt Tobin and Dick Tobin, the homebred daughter of Lota Pyc has won two of her three starts at Prairie Meadows this fall, including the first of four Jim Bader Futurity trials on September 29.

Cr Lota Girl drew post 10 and will be ridden by Brayan Velazquez.

The Polk County Derby for Iowa-bred sophomores will be led by Lil Stepper, a homebred son of Lil Kool Wagon trained by Stacy Charette-Hill for owners Michael A. Pohl and Bob Urich. Lil Stepper has won two of eight starts and has earned $52,718, and his two wins in six outs at Prairie Meadows include a neck victory in the 400-yard, $68,000 Iowa Stallion Derby (R) on September 3.

Lil Stepper will be ridden by Jorge Torres from post 4.
