SUNLAND PARK, NM—DECEMBER 27, 2018—Nine New Mexico-bred fillies and mares, headlined by morning-line favorite Mamacita Cartel, have been entered in Sunday’s 400-yard, $85,000 Lou Wooten/Sydney Valentini Handicap (RG2) at Sunland Park.
A 4-year-old daughter of Big Daddy Cartel trained by Cynthia Gonzalez for owner David Bloomer, Mamacita Cartel is coming off of a wire-to-wire, 1 1/4-length win as the 8-5 favorite in the 400-yard, $145,000 New Mexico Filly & Mare Championship (RG1) at Zia Park on December 2. The mare’s season record includes second-place finishes to Major Bites in the August 26, 440-yard First Moonflash Maturity (R) at Albuquerque Downs, and the November 4, $170,000 Namehimastreaker New Mexico Cup Championship (RG1) at Zia Park.
Mamacita Cartel drew post 6 and will be ridden by Edgar Martinez. The mare’s eight opponents include Mason A. King’s Regard The Rose, a multiple stakes winning sophomore daughter of Chicks Regard trained by Alfredo Triana. Regard The Rose has earned $84,033 from eight outs this season, and the filly’s two wins include a neck victory in the 400-yard, $134,000 New Mexico State Fair Breeders’ Derby (R) at Albuquerque Downs on September 23.
Regard The Rose drew post 3 and will be ridden by Alfredo Triana Jr.
