SUNLAND PARK, NM—MARCH 25, 2019—Eighty-nine 3-year-olds, headed by Rustys Miracle and Moonflash Numbers, have been entered in nine West Texas Derby (G3) trials at Sunland Park.
Post time for the first trial is set for 12:50 p.m. (MDT). The last heat is scheduled to go off at 4:18.
A sorrel daughter of Valiant Hero trained by Fred Danley for owner J & SM Inc. of Fort Stockton, Texas, Rustys Miracle is coming off of a three-quarter length victory in a 400-yard, $33,000 open-condition allowance race at Sunland Park on March 8. During her juvenile campaign, the filly earned $73,634 from eight starts and won the 400-yard, $100,000 Rainbow Juvenile Invitational Stakes at Ruidoso Downs.
Bred in Texas by leading breeders Bob and Jerry Gaston, Rustys Miracle drew the rail post and will be ridden by Sergio Becerra Jr. in the fifth trial.
Moonflash Numbers is trained by Salvador Soto for owner Jose J. Soto. A son of champion First Moonflash, the colt won two of six starts and banked $101,427 during his 2-year-old season, and he was a finalist in the 440-yard, $3-million All American Futurity (G1).
Other prominent sophomores entered in the West Texas Derby trials include Wood Be A Superstar, a gelded son of Woodbridge owned by Aldai Transport. Wood Be A Superstar will be making his season debut off of a 2-year-old season during which he earned $50,594 from eight races and finished third, three-quarters of a length behind winner Woodys Copy Cat, in the 400-yard, $315,000 New Mexico Cup Futurity (RG2) at Zia Park.
The 10 fastest qualifiers will meet in the April 20, $200,000-est. West Texas Derby final.
