Dangerous Cartel Heads Impressive Group In Sunday's Grade 3 Oklahoma Derby
Remington Park Oklahoma Bred Futurity(RG1) runner-up Dangerous Cartel will head a strong group of 3-year-olds in the $200,000 Oklahoma Derby(G3) trials on Sunday at Remington Park.

Dangerous Cartel Heads Impressive Group In Sunday's Grade 3 Oklahoma Derby

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK—MARCH 3, 2021—Dangerous Cartel, runner-up in the $891,900 Remington Park Oklahoma-Bred Futurity(RG1) last season will head a talented group of 3-year-olds vying for a qualifying spot in the $200,000-est. Grade 3 Oklahoma Derby when they compete in seven trials on Remington Park's opening card Sunday evening.

First post is set for 6:00 p.m. (CST) with race 1 thru 7 dedicated to the Oklahoma Derby trials. Race 8 thru 13 feature 2-year-olds vying for a qualifying spot in the $150,000-est. Grade 1 Oklahoma Paint and Appaloosa Horse Futurity.

Set to make his first start of the season, Dangerous Cartel (2-1) will be ridden from the outside post (8) by jockey Cody Smith in the final trial Race 7. Trainer T.L. Underwood conditions the son of last year's leading third-crop sire Coronado Cartel for owner Bill Underwood.

The bay colt compiled a (6) 1-2-1 record last season and banked $176,086. He just missed by a nose in the Remington Park Oklahoma-Bred Futurity(RG1) to Eye Work For You and was third in the $142,100 Oklahoma Horsemen's Association Futurity(RG2) in his last start September 27th at Will Rogers Downs.

Jerry Bailey bred Dangerous Cartel in Oklahoma from the Leaving Memories mare Dangerous Dawn.

Dangerous Cartel will face Oklahoma Futurity(G2) runner-up Relentlessly (2-1) who will start from post 8 under jockey Rodrigo Vallejo in trial 7. Jose Huerta conditions the son of leading third-crop sire Hes Relentless for owner Aguila Negra Racing Inc.

Bred in Texas by Randy and Sandy Coleman, from the Carters Cartel mare Runaway Renata, Relentlessly has run first or second in all four of his career starts and earned $81,073.

Undefeated Leading Cartel (5/2), the second highest money-earner in the Sunday's Oklahoma trials, will start in the opening trial for owner Reliance Ranches and trainer Mike Robbins. Esgar Ramirez will ride the lightly raced son of Big Daddy Cartel.

After breaking his maiden in his career debut at Remington last May, he went to Ruidoso and won the $334,069 Mountain Top QH Futurity(RG2). With a 3-for-3 record the bay gelding has earned $161.

Out of the Special Leader mare Leading Diva, Leading Cartel has not raced since June 20, 2020. He does, however, have a couple of bullet workouts to get ready for his return. MJ Farms is the breeder .

Leading Cartel will face Indiana Grand stakes winner Heza Fast Kisser, who won the $81,000 Leader of the Class Stakes in his last start on Sept. 15th in the opening trial. This colt is by leading third-crop sire Kiss My Hocks, out of the First Smart Money mare First Smart Stride. He was bred in Indiana by Mark Michel.

Jockey Francisco Raul Ramirez, Jr., has been named by trainer Ricardo Martinez to ride for owner Abraham Favela from post-position 2.

Grade 1 Heritage Place Futurity finalist BPmysoutherndynasty (7/2) will also start in the first trial for owner Elizabeth Logan and trainer Dee Keener. Winner of the Cherokee Nation Stakes at Fair Meadows last summer as well as third in the Black Gold 400 Championship Futurity Lads Division, the son of world champion sire FDD Dynasty has earned $96,662 in 11 starts last year.

Bred by Bill Price from the Southern Cartel mare BP Southern Mariah, BPmysoutherndynasty will start post-position 6 under jockey Rolando Raudales.

Stakes winner Facing The Fire (5-2) will start of owner-trainer Eddie D. Willis in the fifth trial. Jimmy Dean Brooks will ride the son of multiple stakes sire Valiant Hero from the Walk Thru Fire mare Dm Sashay N Fire from post-position 7. Alona James bred in the three-time winner in Oklahoma. Winner of both the Easy Jet Stakes and Remington Park Juvenile, Facing The Fire has earned $80,962.

Restricted Grade 3-placed Card One Starter (7-2) will start from post 8 for owner-breeder Jose Guzman and trainer Edelmiro Carrizales. Second in the Old South Futurity and third in the TQHA Sires' Cup Futurity(RG3) last season, the son of second-crop sire Docs Best Card has won four of eight starts and banked $82,441. Juan Pulido has been tapped to ride.

Grade 1 Ruidoso Futurity finalist Apollitical Redflash (4-1) will start from post 3 under jockey Francisco Calderon. Clint Crawford trains for owner Cavenaugh Quarter Horses, LLC. The Apollitical Jess gelding was bred by Rancho El Cabresto Inc. from the Chicks Beduino Jr mare Chalala. The two-time winner has earned nearly $50,000.

Coming off a win in the $55,335 Mile High Futurity last August, Lr Tempting Beast () will race from post 10 for owner Jamie Martinez and trainer Miguel Pena. Levings Racing LLLC bred the son of Tempting Dash in Oklahoma from the Streakin Sixes mare Racing Streak. He has won two of four starts and banked $30,343.

The 10 fastest qualifiers from Sunday's trials will meet Saturday, March 20th in the $200,000-est. Oklahoma Derby final.
