Tony Guymon Reaches 1,000 Quarter Horse Wins

LOS ALAMITOS, CA—APRIL 30, 2017—Tony Guymon, the recipient of the PCQHRA Jockey Special Achievement Award in 2016, scored his 1,000th career Quarter Horse win after piloting Carol and John Cooper’s Branquino to victory in the third race on Saturday at Los Alamitos.

Guymon has enjoyed some great moments at Los Alamitos since arriving here to ride full time a couple of years ago. His biggest moment came last year when he guided Fawna Knight’s Worth Doing to first place in the Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity.

Guymon also guided One Proud Eagle to victory in last years $428,400 Kindergarten Futurity, the stakes’ richest since 1987. He also guided in 2016 Bannister to win the Wild West Futurity and My Favorite Check in the Los Alamitos Maiden Stakes. He also won the 2015 Maiden Stakes aboard Energy Cartel.

Guymon has won races at virtually all major Quarter Horse tracks including Sunland Park, Remington Park and Ruidoso Downs. He rode the outstanding filly Wild Six to a great 2-year-old season in 2007, winning both the West Texas Futurity and Rainbow Futurity and also a sixth-place finish in the All American Futurity.

Guymon has also won over 200 Thoroughbred races and early in his career he spent time riding in the southern California Thoroughbred circuit.

"That was an experience for a kid from Utah to be in the same jockey’s room as Gary Stevens, Laffit Pincay Jr., Chris McCarron and so many others," Guymon said. "They were so willing to teach the little things to young riders. The great Gary Stevens took me under his wing and would give great advice. "

In 2017, Guymon piloted the Mark Skeen-trained Worth Doing to victory in the meet’s richest race, the Los Alamitos Two Million. He also piloted Worth Doing to runner-up finishes in the Grade 1 Ed Burke Million Futurity and Governor’s Cup Futurity and a third-place finish in the Grade 1 Golden State Million Futurity. Guymon will ride Jessies Corona and Favorite Kay in Sunday’s trials to the Kindergarten Futurity.
