Grade 1 Races Shake Up AQHA National Racing Polls

AMERICAN QUARTER HORSE ASSOCIATION—NOVEMBER 16, 2019— A quartet of Grade 1 races over the past two weeks resulted in some major changes in the latest AQHA Racing National Polls.

In the 2-year-old poll, All American Futurity (G1) winner Mr Jess Jenkins maintained his position at the top of the rankings, but Texas Classic Futurity (G1) winner Trump My Record jumped from No. 4 to a close No. 2.

The Apollitical Blood colt, who runs for owner Cruz E. Nava and trainer Jose Luis Sanchez III, won Texas’ richest race on November 9 when he took the winner’s share of a $904,631 purse at Lone Star Park. It marked the third graded futurity win for the Texas-bred, who has visited the winner’s circle after eight of 10 starts on the year with earnings of $791,153.

Rosenthal Ranch LLC’s Runforyourlife, a Favorite Cartel gelding conditioned by Chris O’Dell, jumped into the poll at No. 7 after a victory in the $1,072,850 Golden State Million Futurity (G1) on November 3 at Los Alamitos.

In the older horse poll, Apocalyptical Jess, last year’s 2-year-old champion gelding and this year’s winner of the Ruidoso Derby (G1) in June, again held the No. 1 spot, but two new horses entered the rankings. Scott Bryant’s Flash And Roll, last year’s champion 2-year-old and champion 2-year-old filly, zoomed up to the No. 3 ranking after the Justin Joiner trainee defeated now-No. 5-ranked Powerful Favorite in the November 10, $1,009,650 Los Alamitos Super Derby (G1).

Back in Texas, a win by Paragon Farms LLC’s Flying Cowboy 123, last year’s champion 2-year-old colt, in the November 9, $344,571 Texas Classic Derby (G1) propelled the Michigan-bred trained by James Gonzales II into the No. 7 spot.

This means that all three of last year’s champion 2-year-olds have Grade 1 wins this year and are ranked in the Top 10.

Only two more polls remain for 2019, with the next set due to come out following the Champion of Champions (G1) and Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity (G1) in mid-December and then a final set of year-end rankings after December 31.
