Records Crash As Highest Selling QH Yearling In History Tops Ruidoso Select Sale Opener

RUIDOSO DOWNS, NM—SEPTEMBER 3, 2021—Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale kicked off their annual three-day auction today (Friday) by setting records across the board.

Highlighting the night was Hip 137 First Texas Flash, who sold for an all-time Quarter Horse Yearling record of $800,000.

A total of 163 yearlings went through the ring with 140 selling for a record $8,560,500, a 52% percent increase from last year when 154 of 177 sold for $7,112,500.

"We’ve never had a first night session of our sale come close in comparison to this record," All American Ruidoso Horse Sale Company General Manager Lowell Neumayer said late Friday. "We grossed $9,384,179 on 163 head."

The yearling average on opening night came in at $61,146, a jump of 32% from last year's Day 1 of $46,185. The median soared to $42,500 on opening night, up 20% percent from $35,500. The buy-back rate was 13,5%.

In the opening session 24 yearlings sold for over $100,000 and 68 head broke the $50,000 mark.

"Thank you very much to everyone that attended," Neumayer said. "We have another outstanding book for our second session on Saturday that gets underway shortly after the last race at Ruidoso Downs."

West Texas Racing Partnership paid the highest price ever for a Quarter Yearling at auction when they purchased First Texas Flash for $800,000 from the consignment of leading Quarter Horse breeder Julianna Hawn Holt.

Hip 137 First Texas Flash's $800,000 sale price eclipsed Corona Caliente's 20-year record price of $700,000 for a race-bred Quarter Horse Yearling sold at auction. The son of First Down Dash out of Corona Chick sold at the 2001 Vessels Schvaneveldt Yearling Sale in Bonsall, California.

First Texas Flash is a First Moonflash full brother to two-time AQHA Racing champion filly Flash And Roll, earner of $1.7 million with wins in the Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity(G1), Los Alamitos Super Derby(G1), Golden State Million Futurity(G1), etc. Flash And Roll was a $200,000 Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale graduate in 2017. The dam is AQHA Racing Champion Stylish Jess BR by Feature Mr Jess.

Among the West Texas Racing Partners are Joe Dee and Melanie Brooks and Scott and Jamie Bryant (there are other partners involved that had not been named at sale time). Scott Bryant was the buyer of Flash N Roll and campaigned her throughout her career before selling her back to her breeder Julianna Hawn Holt.

There was a 3-way tie for the opening night second-high seller between three yearlings that brought $220,000 apiece.

Canadian River QH, LLC paid $220,000 for Hip 155 Valiant Livy, a Valiant Hero filly out of AQHA Dam of Distinction Jess Sass Me by Mr Jess Perry. Lazy E Ranch, LLC, Agent for Speed, LLC consigned the sister or half-sister to 11 black-type and 2 champions.

Lazy E Ranch, LLC, Agent for McColee Land & Livestock, LLC consigned Hip 66 Miami Bound, a colt by first-crop sire champion KVN Corona who brought a final bid of $220,0000 from Tacho Cavazos. The bay colt is out of RG2-placed Budder Think Twice, by First Down Dash. She is the dam of multiple stakes-placed Budderlicous. This is the family of Golden State Million Futurity(G1) winner Igotyourtac and stakes winner Scoop Of Sunshine and Here Comes The Budder.

Lazy E Ranch, LLC, Agent for Speed, LLC also consigned Hip 133 Sassy Dynasty, an FDD Dynasty colt who was purchased for $220,0000 by Bane Wood. Sassy Dynasty is also out of the aforementioned AQHA Dam of Distinction Jess Sass Me by Mr Jess Perry.

West Texas Racing Partnership led all buyers in the opening session with three purchases totaling $920,000. Coke L. Gage paid $419,000 for six yearlings and Chow Ventures signed for two yearlings grossing $375,000.

Julianna Hawn Holt was the leading consignor or agent in the opening session with six head grossing $1,487,000. Lazy E Ranch, LLC, Agent for McColee Land & Livestock, LLC had 10 yearling gross $884,000, and Lazy E Ranch, LLC, Agent sold 14 head for $556,000. Lazy E Ranch, Agent for two other clients were #4 and #10 on the opening night Top Ten Consignor and Agents list.

First Moonflash led all sale sires in the opening session (by average with two or more sold) with six yearlings to average $166,857. FDD Dynasty had 11 for $83,227 and leading first-crop sire had five yearlings average $80,200. Champion KVN Corona was the leading first-crop sale sire by average on night-one with 13 head averaging $46,846.

The Ruidoso Jockey Club is catering the sale from the "Horse Sale Kitchen", offering breakfast, lunch and dinner. The kitchen opens daily at 6:30 a.m. They will also offer breakfast and lunch on Wednesday and Thursday (Sept 1-2). Take out service will be available as well as bar service will be available in the "sales pavilion" during the sale.
