Retired Jockey and Horseman Walter Hodges Passed Away at 81
CHICKASHA, OK–JULY 29, 2024–Walter Norris Hodges, aged 80, passed away on July 22, 2024, in Chickasha, Oklahoma. Born on November 26, 1943, in Oakland, California, Walter lived a life marked by passion and achievement.
Walter was a man of many talents and interests. He was a prominent figure in sports during his youth, having been a part of the Chickasha youth football team that competed in the Santa Clause Bowl in Florida. His athletic talent was further evidenced by his achievements as a Golden Glove Boxer, team roper and a fearless Bull Rider, a hobby he cherished up until his final days. As a Grand Dad, he loved watching his 6 grandchildren compete in sports and grow into adults.
Professionally, Walter was a distinguished 4th generation horseman. His career as a Quarter Horse Jockey saw him as one of the leading riders at Ruidoso, Raton, and Turf Paradise. One of his most notable victories was aboard Go Together, triumphing over the legendary Easy Jet in the Rainbow Derby. Following his successful riding career, Walter transitioned to training horses, securing wins at prestigious tracks including Remington Park, New Orleans, Houston, Lone Star, and Garden State.
Walter's legacy is carried on by his beloved wife of 60 years, Sue Hodges, their daughter Dawn Cowan and son-in-law Jim Cowan of Chickasha, and their children John, Cole, and Jordan Cowan. Daughter Kristi Petersen of Guthrie, John Petersen and their children Tanner Petersen and his wife Kyley, and Kassidy Petersen. Daughter Tuesdee Hodges Aguilar of Chickasha and her son Cruz Aguilar. His siblings Dale Hodges, Darla Niemi, Wayland Hodges and Dayna Turner and numerous nephews and nieces.
He is preceded in death by his parents Percy and Doris Hodges and sister Rita Danley.
His family will schedule a memorial service for Walter at a later date. His life and achievements will be remembered by all who knew him as a man who lived fully, loved deeply, and left a lasting impact on the world of horse racing.
