OKLAHOMA CITY, OK—MARCH 20, 2025— Trainer John Stinebaugh pulled off a feat this past weekend rarely seen at a racetrack, earning Lip Chip Trainer of the Week for the accomplishment. Jockey Ali Rivera won the Lip Chip Jockey of the Week, helping Stinebaugh in the process, winning the Decketta Stakes with Curls Joyful Wagon.
The oddity of which Stinebaugh was the author came in the Decketta when his older mares finished first, second and third in this stakes race. Behind Curls Joyful Wagon were her stablemates First Time for Wine and Dezigner Jeanz, respectively. Rivera rode Curls Joyful Wagon to victory.
The two co-leading riders at Remington Park, Edwin Escobedo and Francisco Calderon (8 wins apiece), completed the trifecta for Stinebaugh in the Decketta aboard the second- and third-place horses.
For the week, Stinebaugh won with two of his seven starters and ran in the money (first, second or third) with five of the seven. Rivera was just as impressive, winning four times during the week and it may have been his victory in the Decketta that put him over the top in the voting, ahead of Calderon, who also had four trips to the winner’s circle this past week.
They were the only two jockeys with that many wins. Jesus Ayala led the way in the top percentages for horses in the money with five-of-six (83 percent).
It was a much tougher call in the trainers’ race as seven conditioners each had two victories during the week. Joe Davis might have been the closest to winning the award as he also had a stakes win, when Relentless Coronado had his picture taken after winning the Eastex Stakes. Escobedo was aboard for that win.
The other trainers that had two winners on the week were two-time defending and leading conditioner Dee Keener, Matt Whitekiller, Cristian Alcala, Michelle Hurdle and Diego Meza. Hurdle led the way in top in-the-money percentages at 80 percent running first, second or third.
Remington Park racing resumes tonight through Sunday, March 20-23. Saturday, March 22 is Oklahoma Futurity night as the historic race leads a program with five other stakes events. Racing begins nightly at 6pm with Sunday afternoon racing at 4pm. All times are Central.
