OKLAHOMA CITY, OK–APRIL 11, 2025–The Oklahoma Quarter Horse Racing Association (OQHRA) has provided an update to all owners, trainers, and horsemen involved in the 2025 spring meet at Remington Park.
On Thursday, April 10, Remington Park made the decision to cancel the remainder of the evening’s races following concerns expressed by the jockey colony regarding inconsistencies in the racing surface.
These concerns were acknowledged immediately by Remington Park management, and a collective decision was made to pause racing to ensure the safety of both riders and horses.
The recent and extreme fluctuations in Oklahoma weather, including sub-freezing temperatures, high winds, and heavy rainfall, have likely contributed to the track’s inconsistency.
After the first race on Thursday, riders felt that immediate action was necessary. OQHRA representatives, jockeys, and track management began discussions on how best to move forward.
At the request of the OQHRA and the riders, Remington Park reached out to surface consultant Jake Wilson, who recently oversaw successful track renovations at Fair Meadows and Will Rogers Downs. By Thursday evening, Remington Park's Matt Vance had secured Jake’s assistance, and work on the track began without delay.
Jake Wilson spent several hours on the grader Friday morning, and a group of jockeys and trainers met with him and Remington Park management on Friday afternoon to assess the progress. All parties expressed confidence in the improvements being made.
Out of an abundance of caution, Friday night’s racing (April 11) was also canceled to allow continued work and proper watering of the racing surface — a crucial step for safety and durability.
Training will proceed as scheduled on Saturday morning, April 12. Racing will resume Saturday night and continue as planned for the remainder of the weekend.
OQHRA greatly appreciates the patience and cooperation of the horsemen during this time. Canceling races is never ideal, but the safety of our riders and horses remains our top priority.
All horses entered on Thursday and Friday have received a super date and are strongly encouraged to re-enter for next weekend’s races.
While no make-up dates have been scheduled at this time, updates will be shared as soon as plans are finalized. OQHRA will continue to work with track management, jockeys and racetrack consultants to advocate for the safety and consistency of the track going forward.
We understand there may be many questions or concerns. For accurate updates or to clarify any rumors, please contact Krissy Bamberg, Executive Director of OQHRA, at (405) 623-3234.
It is vital that we all work from accurate information as we continue to support one another and strengthen our industry.
PSBA Trials Update:
The PSBA Trials that were canceled on April 10 will now be held on Thursday, April 17, with the finals set for Friday, May 2. The PSBA Allowance remains scheduled for Friday, April 25.
Horsemen preparing for Heritage Place trials who had preps entered on the canceled cards are encouraged to re-enter next weekend; their super dates should help ensure placement.
