SUN CITY, AZ–APRIL 7, 2026–Bobbie Harmon, the veteran rider who guided Laico Bird to victory in the 1967 All American Futurity, passed away peacefully with his family at his home in Sun City, Arizona, Monday night, at the age of 92.

A native of Oklahoma, Harmon was born in Cleo Springs and raised in Enid, the son of Claude and Clara Harmon. His career reflected the traditional path of a true horseman, beginning as a hotwalker before advancing to groom, gallop rider, and ultimately jockey.

Harmon made his mark across the Southwest, riding primarily Thoroughbreds while also competing regularly aboard Quarter Horses. His name became part of All American Futurity history with his 1967 victory aboard Laico Bird for trainer Jimmie Jones, a defining moment in a long and respected career in the saddle.

Following his retirement from riding, Harmon remained deeply involved in the sport, serving as a racing steward in both New Mexico and Arizona.

He shared 64 years of marriage with his wife, Peggy, who passed away in 2020.

Racing ran in the family. His son, Bobbie Don Harmon, known as “BD,” followed in his footsteps and built a decades-long career as both a jockey and later a jockey agent throughout New Mexico and the Southwest. BD passed away earlier this year in February.

Harmon is survived by his daughter-in-laws Shree Cross and Kim Harmon-Childers; granddaughters Nicole Harmon-Hart and Tami Harmon-Cates; great-grandchildren Trista Martinez, Coyd Cates; and nephew Ernie Harmon.

Funeral arrangements will be announced at a later date.
