WEATHERFORD, TX–MAY 21, 2026– The Texas horse industry is encouraging horse owners, breeders, ranchers, racetrack participants, and agricultural organizations to stay involved in legislative issues that impact the state’s equine community and broader agriculture industry.
According to information released through Texas horse industry outreach efforts, state legislation can directly affect tax policy, land use, water access, animal welfare, animal health, and Texas racing. Industry leaders stress that active participation from agriculture and livestock organizations is essential to maintaining a strong voice at the Capitol.
Texas remains home to an estimated 749,000 horses across all 254 counties. The state’s horse industry contributes more than $12.3 billion annually to the Texas economy and supports over 211,000 jobs through direct, indirect, and induced economic impact.
Industry figures estimate Texas is home to:
- 361,370 Quarter Horses
- 114,526 Thoroughbreds
- 268,574 horses representing other breeds, including Appaloosas, Arabians, Paint Horses, Palominos, Standardbreds, Warmbloods, and pony breeds
The industry also supports tourism through travel, dining, lodging, public horse sales, and racetrack operations.
Texas racing continues to play a significant economic role, featuring approximately 180 live race days annually with an estimated $412 million wagered each year, including roughly $24 million in live wagering.
Horse industry advocates are also promoting upcoming fundraisers, events, public service announcements, and opportunities for individuals to make their voices heard on legislative matters affecting Texas agriculture and equine interests.
