EDMONTON, ALB–JUNE 26, 2025–The 2025 edition of the $35,530(CAN) Adequan Century Mile Derby Challenge Final is set to go off as Race 1 at Century Mile Racetrack and Casino on Thursday, June 27, with a scheduled post time of 6:15 PM (MT).
Contested at 400 yards, the race features a field of 3-year-old Quarter Horses enrolled in the AQHA Challenge program. In addition to the winner’s share of the purse, the victor will secure a berth in the $165,000-est. Adequan Derby Challenge Championship (G3), scheduled for October 18 at The Downs at Albuquerque as part of AQHA Challenge Championship Night.
The morning-line favorite at 5-2 is #4 First Famous Prize, a consistent filly owned by Commotion Creek Contracting Ltd. and WT Ranches Ltd. Trained by Buckey A. Stockwell and ridden by Martin Ortiz, she has amassed two wins and three runner-up finishes from seven lifetime starts, all against strong stakes competition.
Bred in Texas by Weetona Stanley, the sorrel daughter of leading sire One Famous Eagle out of Fancy First Prize by Desirio is undefeated in two prior starts at the 400-yard distance.
She hasn’t raced yet in 2025 but was last seen winning at Century Mile in the $107,944(CAN) Canada QH Cup Futurity(G3) at Century Mile over this same trip and surface last September, displaying a powerful late kick to win by a clear margin. She has earned $60,781.
Close behind at 3-1 on the morning line is stablemate #3 Team Rip 109, a gelding bred in Alberta by co-owner Buckey & Beverly Stockwell. Also trained by Buckey Stockwell, Team Rip 109 will be ridden by O.A. Hernandez.
This son of Pyc Fun N Fancy out of See Me Do It Too by Favorite Cartel has demonstrated sharp form with two wins and a narrow runner-up finish in four career starts, all at Century Mile.
After a late-running second beaten a nose in a 350-yard allowance on May 30, he appears primed to stretch back out to 400 yards, a distance he’s yet to try but seems well-suited for given his closing style.
Another prominent contender is #5 Sizzles Boss, listed at 4-1. Racing for the Cinch Up Syndicate and trained by Buckey Stockwell, the Alberta-bred gelding will have Alfredo T. Amador aboard.
A four-time winner from seven starts, the JD Wagon Boss—Northfork Sizzle by Sizzlin Red Corona gelding was bred by K. Glenn Wills. He narrowly missed in his 2025 debut, finishing a solid second in the $21,000 CTM Horsemen’s Derby on May 17.
Last season, he captured the $66,000(CAN) Alberta Bred Futurity at Century Downs and the Sale Stakes Futurity at Century Mile, showing a proven class edge against regional competition.
The Adequan Century Mile Derby Challenge field is a competitive assembly of emerging regional stars. With stakes credentials and prior matchups among the top choices, this year’s renewal promises an exciting start to Thursday’s card at Century Mile.
The winner not only earns a place in the gate for the prestigious G3 final in Albuquerque but may also stamp themselves as a top 3-year-old in the Canadian Quarter Horse ranks.
