LOS ALAMITOS, CA–NOVEMBER 6, 2024–Checkn Cartel, In The Mode, Silver Bac, and Market Analyst, a foursome of talented fillies that competed in the Grade 1 Los Alamitos Oaks earlier this year, are among the 10 sophomores that will get together in the running of the $30,000 Justanold Love Handicap at 350 yards in the ninth and final race on Saturday’s card at Los Alamitos.
Owned by J. Francisco Diaz, Checkn Cartel is the top earner in this group with $202,387 already to her name. The Favorite Cartel filly picked up the bulk of her earnings after running fourth in the meet’s richest race, the Grade 1 Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity last year.
She’s competed in two major stakes events this season, running second in the Governor’s Cup Derby and sixth in the Oaks. Lindolfo Diaz will saddle the homebred filly, who’ll be ridden by Armando Viramontes from post number two.
Ed Allred’s In The Mode has been solid the entire year, running fourth in the Oaks before finishing second to the longshot Escalate in the La Pacifica for sophomore fillies. The three-time winner enters this race after posting a head victory in an allowance event on October 12. Gabriel Lara will pilot the Scott Willoughby trainee from post number seven.
Steve Burns, Jose Flores and Mark and Marta Winslow’s Silver Bac has posted some sharp efforts throughout her career. Twice a winner here, the daughter of Seperate Interest won a trial to the Los Alamitos Two Million last year. Then she qualified to the Oaks, eventually finishing fifth in the Grade 1 final.
She enters this race after running in the trials to the Los Alamitos Super Derby and will be ridden from the rail by Cruz Mendez. Burns’ Market Analyst is the other runner with experience in the Oaks, finishing seventh in the final before winning a trial to the Governor’s Cup Derby. Mike Casselman trains the Favorite Cartel filly, who will have Ruben Lozano aboard.
Parsons Family Limited Partnership’s Rockin With Energy, a winner of over $192,000, is back to face fillies after taking on older mares in the Sound Dash Handicap. The talented daughter of Parsons Rock faced open competition in the Golden State Derby and was a winner against her own sex in the Debutante Stakes on California Breeders Champions Night. Top trainer Paul Jones conditions the filly, who will be ridden by Henry Reynoso Lopez from the outside post number 10.
The field of 10 will also include Johnny Trotters’ Famous Cartel Jessy, who was fourth in last year’s Golden State Million Futurity, Dave Merritt and Kim Newman’s M E Ettago Relent, second in both the 2023 Wild West Futurity and this year’s Blane Schvaneveldt, Allred’s Trending Right, Dunn Ranch’s Tres Lunas, and Double Bar S Ranch’s Budderhomesngarden, who defeated fillies in an allowance event in her most recent outing on October 12.
The remaining jockey assignments have Tres Lunas with Armando Cervantes taking off from post three, Irving Lara getting the call on Trending Right from post number four, M E Ettago Relent starting from post six with Jesus Rios Ayala, Famous Cartel Jessy with Erasmo Gasca from post number eight, and Rodrigo Aceves riding Budderhomesngarden from post number nine.
