Opening Night Kicks Off With Holiday Handicap On Saturday, December 28

LOS ALAMITOS, CA–DECEMBER 23, 2024–The new Los Alamitos racing season gets underway on Saturday night with an 8-race program set for approximately 6 p.m.

The feature event on the card will feature seven 2-year-olds making their final start as juveniles in the $20,000 Holiday Handicap at 350 yards.

All seven horses in this race have enjoyed at least one victory during their young career. Asscher, who is one of the nation’s top fillies, won the Holiday Handicap last year.

The Holiday will be headed by Melany and Ron Shalz’s Sassy Britches, who has won three of her seven starts this year. The filly by Apollitical Blood competed in all three trials to the million-dollar futurities here.

She was second in her Ed Burke Million trial, third in her Golden State Million trial, and fourth in her Los Alamitos Two Million trial. Eddie Willis trains the Louisiana-bred.

Oscar Andrade and Steve Burns’ Mas Prieta, a Favorite Cartel filly out of the multiple graded stakes placed mare Jess Mas, is another top filly set to race in the Holiday. Mas Prieta will be making her 10th start of the year. Her top result was a fifth-place finish to Favorite Jesshawk in the Governor’s Cup Futurity.

The field will also feature Jeryl Hartley’s Fyrestorm, who beat eventual Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity finalist Show N Tell Cartel in the Los Alamitos Claiming Stake. Fyrestorm loves to score surprising victories.

Her maiden win came at odds of 36-1 and her second victory was at 17-1. She won the Claiming Stakes at 5-1 odds.

The field to the Holiday from the rail out is as follows: Hott Temptation, Fyrestorm, Sassy Britches, Do The Job, Jess Flaming, Mas Prieta, and Train B Taka.
