Fastest qualifier Rio Dashing Spirit will head the $110,800 Old South Derby

VINTON, LA—MAY 12, 2025—The ten fastest qualifiers to the Old South Derby will run the 330–yard distance for a grand prize of a $110,800 purse on Friday, May 16. These top ten finalists come from four heats on April 25.

Fastest qualifier Rios Dashing Spirit won her heat by a length. Rios Dashing Spirit is a filly sired by Apollitical Spirit for owners BM AQ Racing, LLC. The filly qualified in 2024 for the TQHA Sires Cup Futurity [G2] and has started nine times, claiming two victories at Delta Downs, with a lifetime earnings of $24,250.

Rios Dashing Spirit is conditioned by Paul Leal and ridden by Hugo Gutierrez from post one.

Jj Jessa Dynasty is coming in from the second fastest heat, who also won her heat by ¾ of a length. Jj Jessa Dynasty is sired by Jj Jess An Meteorite for owners Jorge Alan Bazaldua, Jr., and Jose Carrizales. In 2024, the filly qualified for the Evangeline Downs Futurity [G2], has won four times, earning $43,856

Jj Jess Dynasty is conditioned by Jose Carrizales and ridden by Ricardo Hernandez, Jr. from post four.
