SHELBYVILLE, IN–JUNE 27, 2025–An action-packed day of racing awaits at Indiana Grand Race Course on Saturday, June 28, as forty-five Registered Indiana-bred juveniles line up across five trial heats of the Gordon Mobley Futurity Trials, all vying for a spot in the lucrative $195,800 final on July 19. Each trial covers 350 yards; only the ten fastest qualifiers will return for the final.
The evening also features the Heartland Futurity Trials, an open event with fifty-five juveniles entered across six trial races. With $100,000 added to the final purse and the ten fastest times advancing, these races promise speed, surprises, and emerging stakes contenders.
Gordon Mobley Futurity Trials Preview
In the opening heat, all eyes are on Watch for Estela, a promising chestnut filly sired by Escondido Beach out of Watch for Corona. After a neck loss in her debut, she returns as the 7-5 morning-line favorite for owner Jorge Ovalle Sanches and trainer Anthony F. Cunningham. Luz D. Martinez gets the call from post one.
Heat two features Lead Me to the Beach, another Escondido Beach filly, out of Sheza Classy Leader. After a respectable fourth in her debut, she could move forward sharply. Owned by Mark Michel, Tim, and Casey Pequignot, she breaks from post eight under Edgar Diaz for trainer Claudio Barraza.
The third trial brings together two of the quickest Indiana-bred juveniles:
Hh Shakem Cate, an impressive debut winner by 1¼ lengths on June 4, is trained by Jessica A. Vazquez and will break from the rail under Giovani Vazquez-Gomez for owner Brisa Alia Ventura Hernandez.
Seven Beaches, a sharp maiden winner on May 13, aims to upset the field. Sired by Escondido Beach out of Eyem Sixes, the filly runs for Pamela Brickley Hann and trainer Anthony F. Cunningham, drawing post seven with Luz D. Martinez up.
Heat four features Political Winnr, a son of Eos a Political Win out of Ms Fool Me Once, looks to keep his form after breaking his maiden by a head on May 26. Trained and owned by Anthony F. Cunningham, he starts from post two with Martinez again in the saddle.
In trial 5, Hf Kiss This Too brings a strong résumé from Remington Park, having finished second in the Oklahoma Juvenile Stakes. She’s a daughter of Kiss My Hocks and is owned by breeder Randy Haffner. With Jessica A. Vazquez training and Giovani Vazquez-Gomez riding, she’ll start from post six and looks to lock in a finals berth.
Heartland Futurity Trials: Speed and Promise on Display
Beginning in Race 6, the $172,480 Heartland Futurity Trials showcase fifty-five juveniles across six heats. The top ten fastest advance to the finals on July 19.
In the first heat, the 5-2 morning-line favorite Paint Me Sass, by Pyc Paint Your Wagon out of Jess Sass Me, returns after a neck victory on May 28. Owned by Campos Family Venturez, LLC, trained by Claudio Barraza, and ridden by Edgar Diaz, she breaks from post seven and figures prominently.
Race 7, second trial heat showcases Mr. Booombastic, a colt by Dulce Sin Tacha out of Dancing Iam, travels in from Remington Park with a 1¼-length victory in his Oklahoma-Bred Futurity trial. He is trained by Ricardo Martinez for owner Carlos Ramos, and he’ll start from post eight under Martin Munoz.
In the third heat Suzys Kristine, a 7-5 morning-line favorite, broke her maiden greenly but gamely on May 5. By One Fabulous Eagle out of Suzy Cartel, she was a $10,000 Heritage Place Yearling Sale purchase for owner-trainer Jessica A. Vazquez. She breaks from post one with Giovani Vazquez-Gomez aboard.
Race 9 has One Magic Eagle, which brings experience shipping in from Texas. One Magic Eagle is the 3-1 favorite after two strong runner-up finishes in major trials at Sam Houston Race Park. Trained by Tim Eggleston for breeder-owner Gregg Wofford, she starts from the rail under Rolando D. Pina.
In race 10, Miss Coronarita is out to prove herself after a neck win on May 31. Miss Coronarita aims to keep climbing. Sired by Kvn Corona out of Senorita Tres, she races for Phillip R. Harrison and is trained by Tim Eggleston, breaking from post nine under Luis E. Luna Diaz.
Final heat Race 11, Candy Spice, rounds out the night, closing the card. Candy Spice carries a strong résumé with $21,036 in earnings. Sired by Jess Good Candy out of Tres Spice, she was an $11,000 yearling purchase for AJK Racing Stables, LLC. Trained by Sacramento Chavez and ridden by Oscar Macias, she’ll start from post two with plenty of expectations.
Looking Ahead
With two stacked trial series offering a combined $250,000+ in finals purses, Saturday's card at Indiana Grand promises to highlight some of the top two-year-old Quarter Horses in the region. All eyes will be on the stopwatch, as only the ten fastest in each series return on July 19 for the Gordon Mobley Futurity and Heartland Futurity Finals.
