SHAKOPEE, MN—JULY 9, 2025—Quarter horse trainer Jason Olmstead has the makings for a very good night Thursday at Canterbury Park. He has seven 2-year-olds in the $57,156 MQHRA Stallion Auction Futurity and entered two in the $22,400 Bob Morehouse Stakes.
Olmstead ran nine horses in the MQHRA Futurity trials on June 24 and qualified seven, including the six fastest qualifiers. Holliewood, the quickest of the seven, was a two-length winner of her trial, recording an 88 speed index as the 4 to 5 favorite. Kyndling was the second fastest qualifier with an 84 speed index.
Jockey Armando Alvidrez was aboard both and will ride Holliewood, owned by brothers Bill and Tom Maher, the 2-1 morning line favorite in Thursday’s 350-yard dash. Tom Maher, who has an ownership interest in four of the entrants, is partnered with Amber Olmstead on McGreggor, who was favored in his trial but buckled at the start, finishing third a neck behind Kyndling. Ramiro Garcia has the mount on McGreggor.
Trainers Ed Ross Hardy, Tyler Stein, and Haley Hobbs qualified the others in the 10-horse field.
The $22,400 Bob Morehouse, at 350 yards and restricted to quarter horses bred in Minnesota, follows the MQHRA Futurity as the eighth race Thursday. Olmstead has won the Morehouse seven times including the last three renditions.
He trains 9 to 5 favorite Relentless Legacy for Tom Maher and Beep Beep Rev Rev for Summer Run Inc. Hardy, also a seven-time Morehouse winner, entered Eos Keep Dreaming for owner and breeder Corey Wilmes.
Both Hardy and Olmstead are Canterbury Park Hall of Fame members. Hardy has won 12 training titles, two more than Olmstead who is leading the meet currently.
Hardy has won the most quarter horse races at Canterbury with 365 wins. Olmstead is second with 241 and is the all-time leader in purse earnings with $4,603,193. Hardy is second all-time with $4,124,148.
Racing begins Thursday at 5:10 p.m. central with five thoroughbred races followed by four quarter horse races.
