Toby Sis, This Lady Is A Vamp Among Top Fillies In PCQHRA Breeders Final

LOS ALAMITOS, CA–SEPTEMBER 12, 2025–Ed Allred’s homebred filly Toby Sis, undefeated after her first three career starts, looks to keep up her unblemished record when she takes on the equally talented fillies Parsons Ranch’s The Lady Is A Vamp and Kolleen Ledgerwood’s Fancy Upp in the Grade 2, $270,000 PCQHRA Breeders Futurity on Sunday at Los Alamitos.

The three talented fillies have always shown a lot of promise, and it all came together for them on the night of the PCQHRA Breeders Futurity trials at 350 yards. By the end of the night, Toby Sis had the fastest qualifying time and the most impressive win, while The Lady Is A Vamp and Fancy Upp both came through with eye-catching performances.

Toby Sis, a full sister to the multiple Grade 1 winner London Toby, was the star of the night, as the daughter of Favorite Cartel out of London Laura flew out of the gate from post seven and extended her lead with each stride on the way to a 1 ¼ length victory.

The Allred-bred had previously won her trial to the Grade 1 Ed Burke Million Futurity but missed qualifying to the final, but this time around there was no doubt that an appearance in the final would be her next appointment following her impressive trial performance.

“She had been training fantastic coming into this race,” trainer Scott Willoughby said. “She got away a little slow in her (Ed Burke trial) and came and beat them at the wire. She didn’t qualify, and I was disappointed that she didn’t qualify, but not disappointed in the filly because I know she can run a lot. She’s a full sister to London Toby and she’s just getting better every time she comes up here.”

Gabriel Lara will ride Toby Sis for Willoughby from post number eight. The second fastest qualifier, The Lady Is A Vamp, will start from post number nine, which means she’ll be right next to Toby Sis in the starting gate.

The Lady Is A Vamp did not make the Ed Burke field either after facing trouble at the start of her trial, but since then she’s posted a 1 ¾ length maiden win followed by a solid ½ length win in her trial. Henry Reynoso Lopez will pilot the Paul Jones trainee.

“This filly has been good from day one and has been one of the barn’s favorites,” Jones said. “We love this filly. She’s (crossed the wire first) in three out of four races. The one race she had a little trouble in she got bumped and knocked around the Ed Burke trials. That was a little disappointing but then she came back and won. She ran a flawless race (in her trial) and did her job. Henry said he rode her nice and easy and didn’t have to push her too hard. He said it was just a nice little ride.”

Bred by Jay and Char Parsons, The Lady Is A Vamp is by Apollitical Blood out of the multiple stakes placed mare Another Wise Lady.

Former jockey now trainer Cesar De Alba won the PCQHRA Breeders Futurity with the Pat Visscher-trained Jumpn Beduino in 2009. De Alba will now look to win it as a trainer with Ledgerwood’s Fancy Upp, a filly by Favorite Cartel out of the stakes winner Up For It.

The Allred-bred filly has finished in the money in all five of her career starts but this was her trial win was her first victory. Irving Lara, who combined with De Alba to win the El Primero Del Ano Derby with Favorite Colossus in 2021, will pilot Fancy Upp from post four.

Among the juvenile males, Cowboy Country 123 is the one to watch after scoring three wins in a row for jockey Cruz Mendez and trainer Jose Flores. The son of Flying Cowboy 123 is out of Haute Cartel, bred by Reginal Rasner and purchased for $96,000 at the Los Alamitos Equine Sale last year. Steve Mickaelian and Juan Moya own the gelding, who had the third fastest time on the night of the trials.

The field from the rail out is as follows: Rich Flex, Run Dont Walk, Cowboy Country 123, Fancy Upp, Elemyntal, Doodah Cartel, Mastros, Toby Sis, The Lady Is A Vamp, and SM My Valentine.

JERIKO WILL MAKE 2025 DEBUT IN 400-YARD FEATURE ALLOWANCE
Bobby Cox’s Multiple Grade 1 winner Jeriko will make his 2025 debut in a 400-yard allowance event on Sunday night at Los Alamitos. Now trained by Chris O’Dell, Jeriko will start from the outside post in race number 4 while making his 20th career start.

The nine-time winner has earned $1,006,022 in his career with victories in the Grade 1 2023 Los Alamitos Super Derby and Grade 1 2024 Robert Boniface Los Alamitos Invitational Championship. First post for the 8-race card is 5:55 p.m.
