Sophomore John Carter Cash Heads Bank Of America Los Alamitos Championship On Friday

LOS ALAMITOS, CA—AUGUST 11, 2020—Juan M. Ramos Dorantes’ John Carter Cash has been one of the brightest stars in the sophomore division at Los Alamitos this season. The Oregon-bred son of Carters Cartel has always shown a flair for victory, as he began his career by winning his first three career outings as a 2-year-old., including the Pot O’ Gold Futurity at Sun Downs.

Already a stakes winner against 3-year-olds this year, John Carter Cash will take on older rivals for the first time when he leads a solid group in the Bank of America Los Alamitos Championship Challenge at 440 yards on Friday night. The winner of this race will earn a berth to the Grade 1 Bank of America Championship Challenge to be held at The Downs at Albuquerque.

"This will be a test for John Carter Cash," Zamudio said. "It’ll be his first time against older horses and his first time at 440 yards. He’s done well at 400 yards, so we are hoping that the extra 40 yards is to his liking. We have done our usual training routine to prepare him for this race and I feel he’s really fit. He is going against a very tough field. There are no easy rivals in this event, but I’m looking forward to see how John Carter Cash responds," Zamudio added.

John Carter Cash has started five times this year. He won the Dillingham Handicap by a length at 400-yards and finished second in the Vandy’s Flash Handicap. He also finished fifth in the Grade 1 Los Alamitos Winter Derby also at 400 yards.

The field will also feature Mark and Peggy Brown’s multiple stakes winner Kissed By An Eagle, who won the John Deere California Juvenile Challenge here during his 2-year-old campaign. The 6-year-old gelding will be making his 25th career start while going after his 11th win. Roman Figueroa trains the son of One Famous Eagle.

Paul Jones and Thompson Racing’s Ballast Point has been the top Quarter Horse at 870 yards for the past year, but he has also hit the board at the stakes level in races at 550 yards. The son of leading sire Favorite Cartel should be the late running threat at 440-yards on Friday night.

The field will be completed by Jorge Haddad’s Firecracker Derby winner Santander, who finished seventh in the Grade 1 Vessel Maturity in his last start, and Nancy Yearsley and J. Garvan Kelly’s Fenian Faith, who ran fourth in this year’s Grade 1 Charger Bar Handicap and most recently raced in the Grade 1 Debbie Schauf Remington Park Championship.
