Streaks Of Power Daylights The Field To Win The Cox Ranch California Distaff

LOS ALAMITOS, CA–AUGUST 4, 2024–Racing for lessee Robert Tyburski, Streaks Of Power's strength and might were in full display once again at Los Alamitos, as the 4-year-old mare by the Thoroughbred sire Power Jam overcame a less than perfect start to eventually dominate the running of the $26,180 Cox Ranch California Distaff Challenge on Sunday at Los Alamitos.

Streaks Of Power has now posted three big wins from her four starts at the Orange County oval, her most recent win in the California regional being a 1 ¼ length decision over Flash Of Sass while posting a winning 400-yard of :19.961.

Ridden by Armando Cervantes for trainer Monty Arrossa, Streaks Of Power lugged out sharply after breaking slow and would then angled back to the inside and drift in. Through it all, Streaks of Power's abilities took her to the lead, and she would eventually pull away to a daylight win.

Owned and bred by Ken O'Brien, Streaks Of Power entered this race after a ¾ length allowance win on  July 14. She had previously won her Southern California debut last year when winning her trial to the Los Alamitos Oaks by ¾ lengths in March of 2023.

With those two wins in tow, Streaks Of Power added this win in which she came across multiple paths after moving towards the outside rail at the beginning of the race.

"She didn't break like she normally does," O'Brien said. "She obviously went out quite a few lengths which made us a little bit nervous. I think Armando was more concerned in making sure that they weren't around anyone else, and he just let her go. As he said to me, 'this filly is going to be better than she was.' I think she has everything going right.

This victory earns Streaks Of Power a berth to the Grade 1 Bobby Cox Distance Challenge Championship to be held at The Downs at Albuquerque this October. Bred by Ken O'Brien, Streaks Of Power earned $14,660 for this win to take her career earnings to $83,705. A finalist to the Grade 1 All American Oaks, she's now won four of eight starts in her career.

With her current form, Streaks Of Power certainly looks ready to take on the top mares in the nation in the Grade 1 Mildred Vessels Memorial Handicap here on September 14. Her connections will let her tell them what's next for this stunning mare.

"Earning a ticket to Albuquerque we don't take lightly, and we think that's a big deal," O'Brien added. "Representing Los Alamitos is something that we are very proud to be able to do. As far as what's next, she'll let us know. Between Monty and everyone else involved, I think we'll figure out what's the best thing to do next."

Johnny Trotter's Flash Of Sass earned $6,284 for her runner-up effort in this race. Cruz Mendez piloted the Oklahoma-bred daughter of First Moonflash for trainer Jose Flores.

La Famosa Vaquera, a 3-year-old by leading second-crop sire Flying Cowboy 123 finished third for  owner Hector Cuevas and trainer Elena Andrade. She earned $3,141 for the effort.

Alternative Jess completed the field.
