HOBBS, NM—OCTOBER 9, 2012—Three-year-olds will take the spotlight Sunday at Zia Park in three trials to the 440-yard, $200,000 estimated Restricted Grade 2 New Mexico Classic Derby for Quarter Horses bred in New Mexico.

In the first trial for the New Mexico Classic Derby, Call Me a Blazn Chic will attempt to reach the finals and become the first horse ever to sweep the New Mexico Classic series after he won the New Mexico Classic Futurity on last year’s New Mexico Cup Day. J and M Racing and Farm own the Chicks A Blazin daughter who has earned more than $446,000.

Fury of the Storm, a stablemate from the Jaime Dominguez barn and winner of the Zia Derby at Ruidoso Downs in his last race in July, competes in the second trial. The Furyofthewind gelding has won four in a row and again faces Zia Derby runner-up Caliente Colt and the horse he defeated in the New Mexico Breeders Stakes at SunRay Park in May, Untangled Vines. Jaime Dominguez owns the earner of more than $253,000.

The third trial matches First Blazin Love, victorious in the Shue Fly Stakes in January at Sunland, against Rcj Major Storm, who won the Hard Twist Stakes in August at Albuquerque. The Chicks A Blazin colt races for Dwayne Johnson, Lisa Saumell and Johnny Martinez. He has earned just shy of $200,000.

The October 28 New Mexico Cup Day will feature 11 New Mexico-bred stakes worth a total of $2 million.
