Canterbury Park’s Minnesota Festival of Champions Features Two State-Bred Quarter Horse Stakes

SHAKOPEE, MN—SEPTEMBER 6, 2020—Canterbury Park’s $700,000 Minnesota Festival of Champions Wednesday card will feature a pair of state-bred Quarter Horse stakes. Post time for the first of 12 races is set for 4:10 p.m. (CDT).

Wednesday’s 11th race, the 350-yard, $70,350 Minnesota Futurity (R), has drawn a field of 10 state-bred 2-year-olds, topped by fastest qualifier Sweet Carol Line. A homebred daughter of Moonin The Eagle trained by Jason Olmstead for owner Lunderborg LLC, the gray filly is coming off of a neck victory in the first of two trials on August 25.

Sweet Carol Line has earned $14,221 from five outs, and she was a finalist in the August 11, $87,000 Mystic Lake Northlands Futurity. The filly drew post 10 and will be ridden by Nakia Ramirez.

The Minnesota Futurity will be followed by Wednesday’s $67,250 Minnesota Derby (R), which matches a full field of 10 state-bred sophomores going 400 yards.

Corey Wilmes’ Vo Fanastic Aira, the fastest qualifier and 2-1 morning-line favorite, drew post 8 and will be ridden by Ry Eikleberry for trainer Ed Hardy. A sorrel son of Fantastic Corona Jr, the gelding has won his last three starts, including the second of two trials on August 25.
