Apolitical Thunder Ready To Make Noise In Ed Burke Million Trials On Sunday

LOS ALAMITOS, CA—MAY 24, 2021—Juan Humberto Moya’s Apolitical Thunder will be one of the headliners in Sunday’s trials to the Grade 1 Ed Burke Million Futurity.

The marquee billing is well deserved, as the gelding by leading sire Apollitical Jess has posted a pair of impressive wins to start his career.

Bred by Wallace Johnson and trained by Jose Flores, Apolitical Thunder won his maiden start on April 3 by ¾ lengths over Sunny Day and Budget Buster with the later returning to win on April 18 before returning to finish second on May 22.

Apolitical Thunder also came back to win his second start, his return bow coming in a May 8th showcase allowance event featuring winners.

Apolitical Thunder struck late in this race, finishing strongly to outduel his quality rivals that included highly regarded runner-up Griffindore by a nose.

“I called it a little Kindergarten,” Flores said. “It was a nice race with a bunch of nice horses.”

With two wins under his belt, including this high-profile allowance race, Apolitical Thunder will enter the Ed Burke as one of the poster boys for the race.

“He’s still learning and getting the hang of things,” Flores said. “We gave him this out because he had only worked once before he made his racing debut at 220 yards. That first race was like his second workout. This race sets him up perfectly for Sunday.”

Flores also saddled the good-looking filly Good Reason To Run in that allowance race. The Good Reason SA filly went on to finish third in that event.

“She was a little bit green,” Flores said. “She ducked in and out from the rail. Hopefully, she draws differently in the trials. The main thing is that I feel they will both be fine in the trials.”

The trials to the Grade 1 Ed Burke Million Futurity will be held on Sunday night at 350 yards.

The horses with the 10 fastest times will advance to the final on Sunday, June 20. As of this writing, just over 140 juveniles were still eligible to enter the trials.
